A beautiful and extremely well preserved medieval village on top of a hill. We went in the off season on a sunny Saturday and nearly had the whole place to ourselves. There are LOTS of art galleries and artesian shops here. Even the cobblestone streets have art in them. We wondered through the town to the end for a great view. Quite a few restaurants were closed this time of year, but most all the shops were open. I would love to come back someday and spend more time going through the stores. If you are an art lover/shopper, you could spend all day here. If not, all you need is an hour to wander the streets and take pictures.

the 400 bus from Nice can be taken from the front of Hotel Meridien and along some stops on the promenade Anglais. and brings you right to the entrance street to the village.( the bus back is on the opposite site of the road where you arrive. the tourist info office is just inside the village and very helpful in giving ideas where to have a good meal (fantastic lunch at the restaurant Tilleul). The views of the village is ok not that breathtaking . Many art houses with interesting displays of paintings sculptures etc that may keep those interested for hours. In November we did not encounter swarming tourists.

We think we've 'cracked it'!!! Stay in St. Paul and then you can choose your times to wander the gorgeous streets, each flanked by THE most interesting Art Galleries and Gift Shops. And there is so much more: Chagall rests there; exhibitions and sculptures on the rampart walls, wonderful restaurants and breathtaking views.

Breakfast at 8 at the Cafe de la Place, and you will see the coaches arriving! Within an hour, St. Paul is spilling over with tourists. It is one of the best preserved perched villages, so what can we expect?

Stay in or near the village, and visit very early in the morning, or better still - to get the wonderful light - go early evening, by which time, the crowds have gone. In the early evening light, the ambience is amazing!
