“Location, location, location!”
Reviewed August 8, 2009

We took two side view rooms for four nights (195 euro and 211 euro). We have stayed in this hotel many times before and know the area well. It is not a resort hotel (in contrast to its description) as it doesn't offer the facilities that a resort hotel should offer. The location is brilliant, especially for those looking for a quiet but convenient hotel away from the hustle and bustle of Nice itself. The nearby private beach (payable) is as good as any in Nice itself and is partcilularly suited for families with children.

Pros: Brilliant location by the sea for leisurely stroll; plenty of good restaurants nearby; 50% reduction for hotel guests to use Cocody Beach (12 euro instead of 25 euro); sea view rooms have far reaching views of the coast; family rooms available; air con in all public areas; rooms are quite spacious with good sized bathrooms; Cap3000 shopping mall, bus stop and train station are within walking distance; nice, light decor in rooms and public areas; shuttle bus transfers guests to and from the airport. If you hire a car, it is also a very good base for touring the area.

Cons: air con in rooms is hit or miss; use of nearby private beach can become expensive; no set menu price reduction for guests using hotel restaurant 'Chez Panise'; breakfast is over-priced at 23 euros for adults; dedicated facilities for children and teenagers are non-existent apart from swimming pools on Cocody Beach; room service menu is only available from 7-10pm during the evening.

Would I recommend this hotel? Yes- to families that have the finance to make full use of the facilities available. (I find it less stressful than Nice in peak season.) No- to budget restricted travellers and those looking for personal attention in a quaint / quirky hotel.

As mentioned in many other reviews Holiday Inn Port St Laurent has good and bad points. It has a fantastic sea front location, with superb views. The hotel is pretty smart and does feel like a 4 star hotel. The hotel shuttle with pick you up at the airport, free courtesy phone beside the hotel desk in Terminal 2. Our first room was a street view room and was very average. Ok, but not inspiring. After one night we managed to get a sea view room - much bigger and better in every way. 50 euro extra, but worth it. The views are superb.

The hotel staff were friendly and helpful - they had to be as there was no local info in the rooms. Tourist info is west from the hotel along the front, just past the marina. very helpful with train and bus timetables. Taxi into Nice is 30 / 40 euro each way!

The beach is right beside the hotel, it costs 12 euro to use it though. There are three smallish pools on the beach. Beach prices for drinks and food are expensive. Eat and drink elsewhere. Nice beach though.

We never used the hotel for eating or drinking at all - there is a great choice of good restaurants within strolling distance that are cheaper and better . Breakfast at the hotel is a stupid 18 euro, we went to Cafe Belgika about 200m to the west along the front and you can have a nice breakfast there looking out on the sea for about 5 euros.

For dinner there is a fantastic choice of restaurants to suit most tastes and pockets. We ate at the Beach Club close to the marina, about 400m from the hotel. Book early and ask for a beach front table.

Easy to get into Nice. Trains are frequent and it was 7 euro return. Buses are only 1 euro each way, they leave from the Cap 3000 shopping centre or La Passarella(near the SNCF station). Train is much quicker, but the bus station is right beside the Vieux Ville in Nice.

We stayed here 3 nights and went into Nice two evenings. A great short break destination, with a quick free easy transfer from the airport. Great sea view rooms, fantastic weather pretty much guaranteed in summer, good restaurants and the fantastic city of Nice on the doorstep. Overall, really good. With a few changes it could be great.

Since I stayed there over a premium weekend (Cannes Film festival and Monaco GP), the rates were higher than normal - Euro 400 for a standard room, city view on the Saturday while the other days were more reasonable at Euro 200 + breakfast.

The good: very close to Nice airport so you are in your hotel in less than 10 mins. Though I did not use it, they have a free airport shuttle which is avaialble for all guests.

The rooms were OK. Not great especially at that price but then I guess you pay for the location - right on the beach with enough cafes and restaurants to choose from. What I found odd was that in my room (single occupancy in a double room) the toilet was separate from the bath area.

The breakfast was disappointing - Euro 23 for what was essentially a typical Continental breakfast - and you had to boil your own eggs!

The hotel is located away from the city centre so it's best to hire a car (though parking looked to be nightmare in Nice) and explore the old and new town where there are some nice bars and restaurants.

For a family looking to spend time on the beach and use it as a base for a driving holiday I think this hotel could be a worthwhile option but not for the critical business traveller.

I stayed here with my family thinking that they have sandy beaches and beautiful pool area for kids from their falsifying advertisement, it turned out there is no sandy beach and pool area belong to 3rd party which you have to pay 12 Euros per person in order to get in so you can use also beach. Parking is 35 Euros daily, breakfast is 24 euros per person. internet 5 euros per 15 minutes. For the amount you pay to stay you can get 5 star resort and all inclusive. This hotel is very clean motel but not a resort.

Its a very nice hotel - this is my 3rd time to stay there - and each time its an overnight. Why ? Because I can afford one night there but not 3 or 4 or more. Its very expensive, no internet unless you pay for it, no parking unless you pay for it. Watch out for the on-street parking BTW, its free until 8am only. Breakfast is fine, the usual Holiday Inn stuff and staff are very friendly and helpful. A problem with accidental double charging to my credit card was sorted out within a few hours and confirmation emailed to me. The rooms are really nice and the view is quite splendid.

I won't argue with some of the earlier reviews but outline why we would go back:
- ring them from the airport and they come pick you up and have you at hotel in 10 mins
- fab seaview balcony for sitting out at night with glass of wine while baby sleeps in room
- toddlers swimming pool was ideal for our little fella and he loved it (we were never charged a penny for this, maybe out of high season in early june?)
- my missus had a ball in the shopping mall just 10 mins walk away, disappeared for half the day
- a nice strip of restaurants right beside the hotel, push out the buggy and take your pick, sure a little pricy but come on, you're on your hols on the French Riviera

good things;
This is a very picturesque hotel in an ideal spot on the med
most rooms have a beach front view
rooms clean and tidy with balcony
we found the staff pleasant and helpful
very good shopping centre 5 minutes walk away (buy provisions!!!)

bad things;
only beach resort I've been to where you have to PAY EXTRA to use the beach.
Surrounding area is fairly run down as we discovered on our 10 minute walk to the train station.
lots of restaurants and bars in surrounding area but not much else
all of the locals bars/restaurants are very highly priced esp the hotel - 7Euro for a small beer everywhere
hotel underground secure parking (good) but it costs 15Euro per night.

the two of us stayed there for 3 nights and it cost us a fortune - I can't imagine what is cost some of the families who were there
