Owner description: It took Baroness Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild, one of the most original women on the French Riviera, seven years to build one of the most beautiful sites on the Côte d’Azur. An enlightened art enthusiast who travelled back and forth across France and Europe, Béatrice de Rothschild built up an incomparable and eclectic collection of masterpieces: priceless Sèvres and Vincennes porcelain, works by Fragonard, paintings by the masters (Boucher, Carpaccio, Tiepolo, etc.), Louis XVI furniture, and so on.

There is so much to see at this site that you should plan on at least half a day to fully enjoy it. We were a bit rushed on a small group tour, and I regret not having the leisure time to completely explore the 7 gardens and listen to the complete audio guide of the house and its contents - an unusual mixture of collections and decorative items. Tea in the tea room would have been lovely, but again we did not have the luxury of time. A delightful way to spend a day during a bright sunny day on the French Riviera.

A train from Nice to Beaulieu sur Mer and then a walk along a reasonable coastal path towards Cap Ferrat took us to the Villa. We made for the tea room straight away. The salads are named after painters e.g. Botticelli, Watteau, and the Bellini came with blinis. Nice touch. And the fountains squirt in time to music which made people smile. The house is a perfect example of the Belle Epoque and what can be achieved with huge wealth and in spite of a troubling marriage. Early March did not show the gardens at their best but they must be glorious later in the year. The setting is lovely. Perfect.

We didn't plan on visiting but are glad we did. The garden while not having many flowers was still very beautiful and hard to imagine the work to create it. The views from inside the Villa and outside took our breath away. The varied collections of porcelain, art, textiles and even the dreadfully small shoes from China were also outstanding. The tea room was not appealing. The smell as you walked in the door was that of a cafeteria. The prices very high. We spent hours there and you could easily spend a day if you chose to sit and soak in the various areas and really examine the collections.

We definitely enjoyed our visit to the villa, the gardens were amazing even in February (but I'd so much love to come there in May when the roses are blooming - there will be a Rose festival this year from 3-5 May 2014, if I am not mistaken..). The main highlight (along with the views and the sea) are the fountains that are performing an enchanting spectacle where faling water and classical music are mingling together...
The villa's inside is nice too, very extravagant but not kitch at all and the audioguide is provided for free (well, the entrance fee is quite high, that's perhaps why..). ANd don't forget to try the tea room that offers amazing views on the bay of Villefranche! we were there at sunset and the light was just paradisiac...Note that there is also a special combined ticket for those who want to visit also the greek villa Kerylos at Beaulieu (not a real ancient greek villa but an imitation).
We went there on foot (quite complicated, so I'd recomend to do the same only if you don't mind some climbing uphill and if you are not affraid of loosing yourself..but you can of course go there by car or by public transport. But as we are not affraid of little adventure, we arrived by train to Beaulieu, than took the sea-side promenade and than followed the signs through a residential quarter (nice villas and gardens but also big walls surrounding them so you can't really peak inside..) and up the hill..and for the return we choose to go down to the following railway station Villefranche sur mer...Again, I'd advise you to have a map and good shoes as it's some distance away...

Wonderful house with free audio guide in English. So worth having. Interesting - details life of Beatrice Rothschild. Fabulous series of gardens - Japonnais especially and the coloured fountains dancing to Swan Lake out of this world. Brilliant set up inside and out with many interesting artefacts - even some Della Robbia from Italy. Lovely walk along the sea wall from Beaulieu to reach it. Only disappointment was the tea room was shut.
