This is a special occasion restaurant in every way: the amazing room, the waiters in tails, the extensive wine list, the stunning food. It is a place to go to celebrate. And if you have no special reason for being there, then celebrate the great cuisine of Jean-Denis Rieubland.

It is expensive of course - think at least EUR 150 a head and probably considerably more. The wine list is so full of fantastic bottles that you will find yourself ordering something more expensive than you planned. And the extra's can really add up for instance a glass of champagne is EUR 25, bottles of water at EUR 7 etc. But then you don't come here to save money, do you?

The food is remarkable. Visually stunning, creative and surprising with interesting flavours and enormous technical skill. The crab cannelloni is wonderful, as is the vegetable gnocchi. The John Dory for two is another classic. If you like table-side theatre then make sure you order the soufflé.

Service is formal and correct, but not stiff. There is a real passion in the way they describe the food and a real desire to make your dinner a special occasion, whatever your reason for being there.

Arriving at the famous 100 year old Hotel Negresco, we started our evening with drinks in the hotel's bar, filled with olde world charm and character. Thereafter we moved across to the restaurant. We were welcomed and immediately seated at a super table in the restaurant. At first glance the restaurant may appear a bit stuffy and filled with too much pomp, but once the evening's performance started to unfold it all fell perfectly into place. The sheer opulence of the restaurant, combined with what I can only describe as a ballet; the staff of this restaurant all work together so harmoniously, you get mesmerised watching all the service being delivered. The menu was perfectly explained, in your choice of language. Each time a course was served the head waiter explained the dish, its contents and composition. The sommelier was fantastic and right on the money with every recommendation - each perfectly matched and balanced our courses of food. The food in itself is a study all on its own. Each component to each dish was carefully, loving, painstakingly chosen and prepared - the result was that every single item served to us was the very best it could possibly be. Even the bread and butter came from two separate specialist chefs! I cannot compliment the chef enough on the precise balance, combination of flavours and textures and stunning presentation throughout the evening. The evening and all components that went into its magical creation and perfect execution can best be described as magnificently orchestrated! Congratulations to the team running this wonderful restaurant. To anyone considering a very special treat while in Nice or surrounds, I can highly recommend this restaurants as one of the highlights of my life thus far.

What a disappointment. My meal was mediocre. The dessert was irritating in that the flavors of meringue, coffee ice cream and egg custard clashed. My husbands main meal was full of fat and gristle.

The staff was haughty. The wine steward was rude on purpose and would not help with the wine selection.

The maître d's English was nearly incomprehensible.

I was so disappointed that I had to get a gelato afterwards for a very expensive meal.

Outstanding experience
We've been here several times over the years
Never disappointed
We would like to see a reasonable dress code, the men were dressed particularly scruffy but this did not detract from the experience

It isn't necessary to be afraid of the high prices. Don't think of economy, or don't go there. But then you will regret that didn't try most refined cusine in Nice in the best aristocratic traditions. For the first time I advise to order a Chief's set: there will be many interesting surprises. This restaurant is an ideal addition for impressions about Nice, especially, if you also live in Negresco.
