“Great hotel, good location, excellent service from owners”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 29, 2010

Stayed here in late March for two nights and then a further night later in the week, we were given different rooms on each stay and both were lovely with personal touches displayed in the decoration.

The owners of the property were on hand to help throughout our stay and provided excellent service.

The hotel is on the 3rd floor of an old apartment block and there is no lift.

Both rooms we stayed in had a double bed, a private bathroom with toilet and shower and overlooked the main street outside. The shower cubicles are on the small side but the bathrooms are clean, functional and nicely decorated.

The bedrooms are of a good size, both had tvs and a side table or desk. The rooms have large old wooden windows that let in lots of light. As both rooms overlooked the street there was some noise from traffic but this lessened as the evening went on and does not greatly increase again until the bus routes start again in the morning.

We can not comment on the breakfast as we ate out throughout our stay, however the food did look delicious and was served in the dining room filled with family albums, interesting pictures, a small sofa and two resident tortoises.

The location of the hotel is very central, only a few minutes from the main shopping streets, approximately 5 minutes walk to the beach, 10-15 minutes walk to the train station and 5 minutes walk from the main bus station. There is a bus stop close by (along the side of the square containing the 7 illuminated statues) where the number 98 service stops and connects directly to the airport. The local tram service stops at the end of the road close to the shopping area, although we explored the main sights and centre of Nice on foot without a need for bus or tram connections. The harbour is approximately 15 minutes walk from the hotel with connections to Corsica via ferry.

We very much enjoyed our stay and would be booking again for future visits to the area.

We stayed in the Matisse room for 3 days, and it was really a nice stay.
Although the bathroom is tiny (with shower only) and there is some issue with the floor.
Overall, it's worth the money you've paid staying there.
The room is definitely not well sound protected(owners also live there), but after 11pm in the night, it's quiet, we don't get any trouble to have a good sleep and rest.
Each room gets diferent style so for me, it's much better spend the similar amount of money staying in the boring, standard hotel room.
Location is quite good, easy to go anywhere.

I would need too much space to rave on about this hotel. It is cute, quiet, clean, well-appointed, lovingly cared for, and in a perfect location. The only bad thing I can report on the hotel is its lack of lift - this, in and of itself, would be OK, except the hotel is situated on the 3rd floor (that's floor 4 for US folks!) and there is no lift. If you can hoist your suitcases and gear up 4 flights of stairs, this is the best value and nicest place to stay in this price range.

I am a regular traveller to Nice and have stayed in many various hotels, starting from The Negressco to the hip HI Hotel. Recently I have been staying in the Windsor Hotel which has been great. The reason I mention all this is to emphasize what I am about to write about the 'fantastic' Hotel Wilson. I decided on my recent trip to try out this seasoned traveller's heaven (highly recommended by Lonely Planet) to experience something different. Of course, I booked the most expensive room (€50 in high season) which gives you a separate bathroom with shower and toilet. Well, what can I say, from the moment I set foot into this 'unique' establishment I LOVED IT!!! The charm, individuality, care and cleanliness really surprised me. The owners are extremely friendly (for french folks). It shows that they are well travelled. Be careful, they speak various languages, so don't get caught out! The rooms are perfect for what you are paying and the location is superb!
I think this is definitely a soulful place and people with the right attitude to travel will love it!
It's eclectic, friendly, warm and has made Nice even more 'home from home' for me.
Thank you. Tina

A long way up, but so worth it! enjoy the wonderful marble steps!
When you arrive, its stepping in to a little oasis in the heart of Nice. the rooms are all basic and homely! I loved mine, the little single with old fashioned linen sheets on my bed, with fun pillow cases! mine was a Zebra print. Do not expect a duvet! linen sheets in old fashion french way is a must!
Although I had no bathroom in my room, across the hall, WC and shower, all spotless clean and other guests gave you a rattle on the door when all was free.
Breakfast is wonderful! between 8.00 and 12.00, where does that happen?
If you are fed up with hotel chains, go

PS they have a great security finger prints!

My worst complaint wanted to stay longer

1. The location was very good. Just 2 blocks or so from rue Massena and Place Massena; 5-10 minutes from Old Nice. In a relatively nice mixed commercial area. There were restaurants and shops around. However, late at night, it was a bit quiet. The Nice Etoile shopping mall on rue Massena, with a Monoprix, was about 5-10 minutes away. The Galleries Lafayette on rue Massena also had a food section. There was also a convenient Laundromat (in Rick Steves) a block away on rue Pastorelli, next to the Hotel Vendome. From the train station, you could take the tram, and then walk 2 short blocks. The bus station was also only a 5-minute walk away (towards Old Nice).
2. The price was remarkably inexpensive. Cheaper than a hostel. I stayed in 2 different rooms: the first was a small single for 25 Euro, the second (bigger, nicer) was 35 Euro. I contacted them directly though their website.
3. The hotel was a converted apartment on an upper floor in a typical old-fashioned walk-up apartment building. It is not a “hotel” in the usual sense of the word, but more of a B&B. The rooms are off a long hallway. Again, this is not a “hotel” but feels like you are staying at a B&B or in somebody’s home. Very homey atmosphere. There is no elevator, so there are quite a lot of stairs (4 flights or so?). This would not be practical for persons with mobility issues.
4. I stayed in two different rooms. The smaller, cheaper room, was small, long and narrow. Extremely simple. Unadorned walls, with cracks in the plaster. High ceilings. Rather decrepit in fact. Sink, small table, chair, bookcase, OK bed, TV (no English-language channels). The rooms faced the back (roofs of neighboring buildings) but had a small balcony and lots of light. No A/C, but there was a breeze with the open window/door. However, there were some mosquitoes at night. The second room was the “Frida Kahlo” room and was bigger, with a bigger bed (meant for a double) and had a much nicer atmosphere, with prints of Frida Kahlo on the wall. There was also a nice little balcony with table and chair. Comfortable. Both rooms had a sink only. There was a hall bathroom with two clean WCs and one clean shower. I rarely had to wait. Both rooms had very high ceilings, so the rooms felt larger than they were (by floor space).
5. The owners were extremely friendly, helpful and spoke English.

Would I spend a romantic vacation here? No. This was a bit shabby (but with a very homey atmosphere), but in a good location and with great rates (it was cheaper than the hostel), and friendly owners. Highly recommended for travelers on a budget.
