What a ocean view

1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Aug 24, 2019
I got the ocean view room on the first floor which I could not have a nice view.
The receptionsts were not so nice as well as their English.
I paid extra money for the ocean view and actually I did not need the balcony which was pretty opened and I was afraid that someone might have come in so I could not sleep.

Our room was due for redecoration we were told but that doesn’t excuse it being dirty! The bathroom was filthy. Mould everywhere. On the ceiling, the walls and on the door frame. The plug in the sink had corroded, so had the washing line attachment and one of the lights wasn’t working. There were splashes on the walls in the bedroom. We had one pillow each, thin and flat. The only toiletries were body lotion, a cake of soap and a multi functional liquid soap, none of which was refreshed. No glasses, instead the plastic cups that are used in gyms with the water dispensers and these were never replaced. I had a nose bleed the first night and the sheets weren’t changed. There was no fridge and the air conditioning didn’t work properly. We had tablets which we couldn’t keep cool. We complained about the bathroom with no result until the third time on the second evening when we demanded something was done. The young man who came to fix the plug etc was appalled by the state of the bathroom and organized for it to be cleaned. It took two cleans and there was still mould on the ceiling. We sent some clothes to the laundry and one item was ruined. Breakfast was OK but the dining room was in a bad state of repair and there were only 2 staff for a full hotel of guests. No tables were cleared and you had to cook your own eggs. The hotel has no real facilities, is not maintained properly and many of the staff are either unable or unwilling to make decisions around guest comfort.

I booked this hotel for myself and my boyfriend for 5 nights, as the pictures on the website looked nice and it is right opposite the sea. Unfortunately our experience at this hotel was extremely poor, and we decided to change so it would not ruin our holiday.

Upon checking in, the front of house, Christophe could not find our booking, and when he eventually did we found that the room was prepared as a twin and not a double as we had requested. After he very rudely accepted that we had made a request for this on Expedia, he proceeded to go to the room himself to “turn the room into a double” which involved him just pushing the two twin beds together and putting one double sheet over the top (no mattress cover).

We thought this was odd for a receptionist to do as he also left the reception unmanned for about 40 mins whilst we were left wondering what was going on.

Once the room was ready, we found it in a very poor state. The bathroom had mould, very old tiling, and a shower head that leaked and did not work. The beds were uncomfortable, pillows lumpy, and sheets dirty. The “city” view was of bins and rooftops at the back. The safe did not work, and there were no amenities you would normally like such as lampshades, minibar or tea and coffee making. The safe and air conditioning also did not work at all.

The overall feeling of the room was dirty, tired and dingy, not at all matching the photos and certainly not we would hope for when going on a couples holiday. The staff were also very rude throughout.

On our first morning we asked if we could be refunded for the rest of our trip so that we could move to a new hotel. We were told that we would not be able to get a refund for the first two nights, so we had to spend a second night, however this time we were in a different room with working aircon and safe. The standard of the room was as poor as before and the room smelt.

We got a refund and stayed at a far better hotel just around the corner which was the same price as Le Royal.

Perhaps the upgraded rooms are better but if staying in a standard room do not expect a pleasant experience. The negative reviews and pictures are accurate so avoid this hotel!

Great location near the old town with restaurants and shopping. 15 min walk to the train station. Local buses just outside. Quiet room even with traffic outside. Nice view overlooking the sea. Good breakfast. 15-20 minute drive to the airport. Great AC in the room and comfortable beds.

We stayed six nights in a lovely Seaview room with a beautiful view and balcony.
The rooms were clean and service was great most of the time.
However, on the second night our air conditioner started leaking pretty badly, we called reception on two occasions to have it fixed. It eventually was fixed but because the water seeped into the carpet it left an unpleasant smell... in saying that we dealt with it but some might not.

On our 4th night we had called reception to bring us up some extra toilet paper, their response was for us to come and get it ourselves but we refused and told them we were sick and could not leave the room. They eventually came with the paper.

Finally, on our last night we called reception to bring us up some towels for the following morning as we were leaving early for our flight.
The woman on the phone rudely responded
" Why do you need more towels? This isn't your house, you can't just ask for whatever you want."
She then made us go down and grab them from reception ourselves !!
By this point we could not be bother causing a fuss so we just let it go.
But just a piece of advice for that woman... a customer staying at a hotel that should in fact feel like home should be able to ask for what they want/need within reason and I don't think asking for fresh towels should be out of the question.

On a positive note, there was a very helpful, lovely man named Jonathan that was very good with helping us choose where to eat and when we hired a car told us where to park.

Overall, location was great but the service needs a bit of attention.

We stayed at Le Royal as part of a package deal from EasyJet. We had 4 rooms (1 double and 3 singles) with city view. Usually “city view” means a view of the bins however not in this case. We had a view of city apartments with mountains in the background.

The reception staff were pleasant and were all multilingual.

The single room I had (521) was clean and comfortable with a 140cm (4’ 5”) bed, free wi-fi throughout the hotel however there was no mirror in my room (however the other rooms had). The bathroom had a decent hairdryer for a hotel, which makes a change. There was a safe in every room to keep you valuables in.

Lovely terrace at the front overlooking the Promenade des Anglais, ideal for people watching and pre-dinner drinks, although the bar service could be a little slow.

Located in a superb position. Only a 10 minute walk from the train station (straight up the side of the hotel). The Tourist Information Office was 2 blocks away. There was a bus stop across the road and one on the same side a block down to head towards the airport. Close to the Old Town with a vast choice of shops, cafés, bars and restaurants.

Taxi travel from the airport is a fixed price of €32 + a small supplement for bags. However if there are more than 3 or 4 people it may be worth contacting the hotel in advance for a number for a minibus as it is only the same fixed price.

All in all a very nice hotel.
