“Brilliant Surprise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 13, 2013

From outside Chez Papa Fred looks like just another bar but that hides a real gem. The owners are a hard working friendly couple. What to praise most is difficult to choose: the great food, the friendly atmosphere created by the couple who between them do everything, or the cosy place itself? One to return to.

“Delicious and Charming”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 26, 2013 via mobile

Great first night dinner. The owners are a lovely hard working couple who have earned great reviews on TA in French and English in a short time. Loved the Dorade in a sauce of creme de pastis.
We are already plotting our return! Thanks

“Nice and Small”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 25, 2013

We go to Nice once a year to see relatives but ended up eating in the same restaurants each time. We saw this restaurant on Trip Advisor and the excelent reviews so we got a friend of ours who speaks french to pre-book it before we left home. They speak english in the restaurant so we could have booked it.

The place is small with seating for about 24 but well laid out. The starters we had of smoked salmon and fish soup were very good.

We had duck, steak and sea bass for main courses with a choice of boiled potatoes olive oill or salsa, chips or rice. Everything was cooked to perfection and it was an enjoyable meal.

The cost is very reasonable for both food and drink.

To get there from town, take the number 3 bus and get off at Ansaldi which is very close to the restaurant.

The restauranteur and his wife came to speak to all their guests. We will go back next time we are in Nice.

“It's all true!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2013 via mobile

We believed all the rave reviews and were not disappointed. When you walk in, you may be surprised and a little underwhelmed - it's small and the decor is uninspired, but what a meal! The lights were bright and glaring but the wife turned them down and that made it much cozier. All five of our group loved every bite. The chèvre salad was the best I've ever had - with a sauce that made it completely different from all others. The carbonara pasta was the real thing. And the molten chocolate cake! You may think it's an old boring dessert that you've had dozens of times, but this one is absolutely perfect and pretty unforgettable. The chef will come out and greet you and is genuinely interested in who you are and where you're from. It's in a busy working neighborhood so I recommend reservations.
