“Nice hotel but bland design”
Reviewed September 22, 2013

We spent a few nights in Nice because we had a very early morning flight out on our last day. After having stayed at the much more beautiful Carlton in Cannes, this hotel visually was a huge disappointment. That said, it was wonderfully located and really had everything we needed. It was just a let down if you're looking for a very special place to stay. The design, while trying to be deco of sorts, is really very very ordinary along the lines of a typical chain hotel in the States. It was clean and had the necessary amenities, but felt very much like a faceless business hotel, open air pool terrace notwithstanding. The beach across the street is convenient but pricey, but be aware this is not a sand beach. The sun beds are set up on rocks - sizable, actual rocks. The hotel is well situated to walk to the old city and the service is actually quite good.

We spent two nights in what was supposed to be a Superior Partial Sea View Room but were actually upgraded to a full Sea View Room (521) on arrival. We booked through Voyage Prive and got a free tasting box in the room which again was a nice touch. I would recommend asking for a room as high up as possible for completely uninterrupted views of the sea.

The hotel is ideally located on the Promenade des Anglais and everything of note is in walking distance. The Old Town is probably 25-30 minutes on foot.

As you would expect the hotel is fantastic and the staff are wonderful. The style is 1930s Art Deco. The room has all the facilities you would expect, safe, fridge, flat screen TV (with a couple of English channels if you are that way inclined), fresh flowers etc.

All the sea view rooms overlook the central atrium where the pool, terrace, bar and restaurant are situated. On an evening there is a pianist which you can hear from your private balcony.

The pool is heated and open very early so you can swim before breakfast. On the subject of breakfast there was a great buffet selection and a chef on hand who will do you eggs, omelettes and crepes to your specific requirements.

Nice is a bustling city and being located on the main road on the seafront you can hear traffic and aircraft landing at the nearby airport. If I am honest we did get used to it but if you are looking for total peace and quiet then this is probably not the hotel for you! I would never say the noise was intrusive but it was noticeable. Saying that once we closed the French windows on our balcony our room was an oasis of calm and tranquillity.

The hotel does not have its own parking. It is located directly above an underground public parking facility called Palais de la Méditerrannée. The hotel will valet park your car for you (at a charge) however if you have survived Nice’s roads and got to the hotel then finding the car park yourself is extremely easy and straightforward. The parking costs around €24 per day. I am sure there are cheaper options available but we did not have the time or inclination to research. The bus from the airport seems to stop directly in front of the hotel so parking there could be a cheaper alternative.

I enjoyed staying here for three nights. It is located on the promenade so it was nice that we could walk everywhere we wanted to go. The room had a nice king bed. The room was not real large but was still comfortable and clean. The staff was cordial and helpful. The breakfast buffet was on the pool terrace and was good. I enjoyed the pastries and the Swiss chard tarts.

Great location and lovely swimming pool which is so rare in Nice.Staff are excellent- friendly and welcoming.Greg and his concierge colleagues were brilliant and know everything!
Housekeeping is top notch - never intrusive and give a first class service. So far so good....
Rooms are o.k. - ours was tired and desperately needed a coat of paint and a steam clean of the carpet to get rid of nasty Staines(not 5* standard)
Prices are very high and if you go out of hotel and walk a few yards down the road to the left you will find a cafe with the best cafe au lait, fresh orange juice and croissants in Nice for a great price.
We booked well in advance and paid €435 per night not including breakfast and I admit we were a little disappointed as there is no "wow" factor.Raffles in Singapore was cheaper and a good example of true 5*
We would return to Nice but to somewhere a bit less expensive.Restaurant was fair, overpriced and service at lunch was abysmal - too many young staff unsupervised and who chatted together rather than concentrated on giving service.First time in my life that I have been served flat champagne!

Room Tip: Side seaview are best

We stayed here to start out our honeymoon. The staff is great and very accommodating. Our room was clean, with a nice balcony view of the sea. Some things were not as we had hoped. The pools seems small... the photos made it seem much better than it was. The restaurant was poor. The bar closes early, at midnight during the week. Furthermore, it isnt a "5 star" place in my view. 4 star seems more apropos.

Perfect location for Nice - panoramic views - hear of the city.

Rooms: About 375 square foot "Partial Sea View" - 6 floor with ample view of Sea though a few large pillars at front of building, Pool and restaurant below. 1 King bed (really two twins pushed together), nice linens and pillows, sitting area, huge desk with multiple outlets, LCD TV, and large balcony (table and 2 chairs or lounge depending on room size). Room was very modern - brown, beige + orange decor.

Bathroom: Separate toilette and sink/ shower tub area. Excellent water pressure and hot/ cold controls - spacious. Closets were also roomy - hanging area, drawers, wall safe - everything you'd expect.

Check-in: Fast, courteous, efficient. Offered "Full Sea View" for additional 70 Euro - not really required - partial for $375 USD + Tax on Kayak was very good.

Pool: Indoor/Outdoor on 3rd level - next to outdoor restaurant - overlooking the sea. Breakfast buffet came with the room rate. good assortment of breads, pastries, fruits, omelette to order etc. Great view.

Concierge: Useful for maps around town, museum and gallery recommendations - just ok for restaurant guidance.

Casino: On the property and down the block - didn't go in - dress code is casual.

Beaches: Right across the street - both public and private. Private gets your lounge chair, umbrella and towel - 20 - 25 Euro depending on beach and time of year. Beach is rocky - no sand here - need to go to Villefranche or St. Tropez for sandy types. Great promenade to walk, bike or run on. Low cost public bikes - free for 1st half hour.

Room Tip: Go for "Partial Sea View" - 4th, 5th or 6th floor. Shop around - prices better in June an...
