“Really lovely place to stay”
Reviewed May 16, 2012

Me and my mam stayed here for 4 nights in a consul suite on the 5th floor. After reading a few mixed reviews about the hotel i was a little worried but i shouldnt have been! We found the staff to all be very friendly and helpful, they could also all speak several different languages. We recieved fab service from everyone we met.
The room was amazing,it was huge with a big sunken bath,we had a living room and a little kitchen (with everything you would need) 2 big wadrobes and a view over the city! The bed was really comfy and we slept really well with the black out blinds and didnt hear any noise from the streets. It was also well thought out in that the my mam could access the bathroom from a different door to the one next to my room which meant neither of us had to disturb each other in the night. It was spotlessly clean every day.
The rooftop pool was great, the views over the city were great and although it was a little on the small side i was able to swim a few lengths,it was often quiet so a good place to chill out.We didnt take breakfast in the hotel (i thought it was a bit excessive at 20 euros pp) there were plenty of places to have breakfast locally (and a supermarket on the next block).
The location is just perfect, a few streets back from the front and the beach. The staff really couldnt do enough for us,they were fantastic. This might not be the cheapest place to stay in Nice, but to be honest if your after a cheap holiday Nice isnt the place to be however If your after a great hotel in a fantastic location this is the place to be!

We spent 5 days here and really enjoyed our stay. The staff were extremely helpful and able to speak several different languages well. The rooms were well presented and equipped and kept very clean. The roof terrace and Pool were extremely useful after a day out and about on the cote d'azur. This is an ideal place to stay for exploring the area.

Me and my two sisters stayed here in a suite and it was good but at 235 euros a night I would expect more. Breakfast was not included and there s food on the flow in the bedroom. Nice suite with small kitchenette but facilities were limited. It is located about 15 minutes from the old town. Roof pool is nice although didn't use it as it was a bit cold when we went. Would probably stay somewhere on the sea front or nearer old town if I went back.

the hotel is centrally located in Nice just a few blocks from the beach. The rooms were suprisingly large for Europe standards and came with a large soaking tub and kitchenette. I found the service to be very helpful and the pricing was very reasonable for the Nice hotel market. The hotel has a very nice pool on top of the hotel that is part indoor and outdoor which is a nice bonus. WiFi in the room is also free. I would stay here again.

We got upgraded from Junior suite to Ambassador suite. So we were quite happy. Stayed there a total of 4nights. This hotel is the most expensive one that we stayed during our trip in Rome, Florence, Nice and Paris. But still ok..

Spacious room with separate living and bedroom. Come with a small kitchenette with microwave and stove. We cooked breakfast (eggs and bacon) once during our stay. Other than that, we pretty much eat out at all the nice restaurants out there. Tv channel are all in French... Spacious bathroom with tub. Overall a comfortable stay.

Chose to stay here bcos theres a pool. And its heated too. Although we stayed there during May, the day is long, but around 530-6pm, it gets quite chilly and windy. Since we spent most of the day exploring the city, beach or day trips to Monaco etc, we only use the swimming pool around 5-6pm. So really appreciated the heated pool. The pool itself is not very big. Can do abit of swimming if there isn't too many people there at the same time.

Alot of small cafes, restaurants, groceries shop (we got our eggs) around. 10mins walk to Gallery La fayette. 3-5mins walk to the beach along the Promenade des Anglais. 15mins walk (with heavy luggage) to the train station on our departure. We flied in from Rome to Nice. The taxi is not cheap..

Would i stay there again: probably yes..

I have travelled all over the world and stayed at North American/Asian/European/Middle Eastern 1-5 star hotels. I am not difficult to please, but do "expect" good service. Great/good service can make-up for your businesses' inadequacies. I think GoldStar did not make-up for it during my 7-day stay. Honestly, this hotel should be rated as a 3-star hotel. I will not stay there again when we return to the French Riviera. If you stay in Nice, I recommend a different hotel, unless they lower their prices. Bottom Line: It's not worth what they give you (in product and service).

POSITIVES:

Consul Suite was clean and spacious
When we addresses problems, the staff fixed some of them
Free WiFi throughout the hotel

NEGATIVES:

#1, Staff did NOT give good service, just gave service
Example 1: When we arrived they gave us 2 "tour" brochures and told us to call them for reservations. When I called the front desk we asked for availability for 3 different tours. The front desk (male) became upset and snapped at me stating "look, I already called them 4 times today, which do you want". I stated, I will just call the company myself. He was referring to me asking him "what days/times are available since after the initial call he simply called back and said they are not available today" In fact he only called them twice and that's because he didn't listen when I first called informing him we were guests for 7 days and wanted tours around the Skating World Championship times, which we paid over $1200. He didn't seem to understand that we wanted all the tours, but if they are available at conflicting times, we couldn't go. Ultimately, he shouldn't have been unprofessional by talking to me like "he was my buddy" or he "was doing me a favor". I found out the hotel gets a cut of the tour ticket price, which is why they handed those particular brochures.

Example 2: House keeping never re-stocked our toilet paper or soap bars. We had to call and tell them. Also, they would take our robes and not replace them, once again, we had to call and ask for it.

#2: The "buffet" breakfast was not adequate, with very few selections and the charge 20 euro per person/per day (no thanks). For what they give, it should be included in the room rate.

#3: The restaurant due to a new chef only offered 4 choices per day for main course and ran out of deserts frequently (even at 8pm).

#4: We had to wiggle the elevator button to get it to engage and the buttons inside would fall off.

#5: Staff gave us a Nice City bus tour brochure when we asked about it, but didn't stamp it which would have saved us a few euros per person. Of course, we didn't know they needed to stamp it until the tour guide stated he couldn't give the discount without it. When I asked the front desk why they didn't stamp it, they indicated it was an oversight.

Goldstar is an average hotel and not worth the price (product or service).

The hotel is basically ok but at the cost and at supposedly four stars you expect more. The swimming pool was shut all week, the breakfast is simple and not included, the stairs are not accessible so you have to wait an eternity for the smallest lifts, the furnishings are generally ok but tired in a few places, you need to clean your own kitchen because they will charge you €50 otherwise, the staff are friendly thankfully and the location is ok. The windows are only single glazed and the noise is all night long from the road etc. If you were charged a more suitable rate you would be v pleased with the hotel, it's just the relationship between what you get and what you pay.
