“Great for exploring”
Reviewed July 15, 2013

After several years of quick visits, this time I spent two weeks staying in the Old Town of Nice and it's an unusual, if commercial, experience that's also a blast into the city's past. It's a wonderful area to stroll about, given its narrow alleyways, endless shops and fascinating variety of restaurants. It can get shoulder-to-shoulder busy, especially with tourists, but it's still worth spending a few hours there, enjoying the current offerings and imagining what the Old Town must have been like two centuries ago.

“Fun, but touristy”
Reviewed July 14, 2013

The Old Town is fun to walk around in, and there are many, many restaurants to choose from. There are also some very lovely old buildings. On the other hand, this is a tourist destination - so go and plan to enjoy it as such.

“This is the France you came to see!”
Reviewed July 14, 2013

Despite the obvious charms of the prom and the beaches, Nice's real gem is the old town. Whilst its not as sprawling as some of the bigger cities in France, it certainly makes up for in its ability to keep you there. With its colourful back streets, opening in to quaint squares and shopping streets, the fantastic market and an array of bars and eats, it could be very easy to spend your whole trip just getting lost in the charms of the old town. Also, if you are going to find a bargain of any sort in Nice, you can bet it will be down one of these beautiful streets!

“Pretty, spread out”
Reviewed July 14, 2013

The mixture of old and new was unique to the other Old Towns we visited throughout France. You can see history but buy chic clothes simultaneously. Easy, flat walking.

“Magic”
Reviewed July 12, 2013

Meandering around the narrow streets, you need a map in case you get lost. Try and find Palais Lascaris, (closed Tuesdays), entrance is free. This is a wonderful step back to the Savoy time when Nice was part of Italy. Lots of shops, some for the toursist, but if you can, visit the local butchers and La Fougasserie baker near Cours Saleya for something special. Don't miss the Chateua, (there is a lift to the top), the Cathedral and churches, look up for the washing hanging out to dry, the locals (& tourists) hanging out of the windows watching you! Absorb the atmosphere and magic of the Old Town
