“A beautiful walk and outstanding view”
Reviewed November 6, 2012

The Castle Hill is a very nice place to take a walk, it is not very hard to "climb" to the top, and the view is breathtaking. There is not much of the castle to see, but an interesting cemetary with huge sculptures of angels. Next to the large cemetary, a smaller, Jewish one can be found. Most moving is a display of an urn filled with soap made from Holocaust victims.
There is also a waterfall and some mosaics, and a lot of effort seems to be put into keeping the hill clean. A must-see in Nice. After walking up the mountain, treat yourself to a cup of espresso at the Garibaldi Place, or a Salad Nicoise if it is time for lunch.

“Fabulous views”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

Lovely place to walk, have a coffee, hear the 12 noon cannon, view the cascade, wonderful mosaics on walls and walkways. You get views over sea front to one side and port to the other. A peaceful escape from the streets below.

“The best free thing to do in Nice (after the beach!)”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

Castle Hill is a wonderful place to spend a sunny morning or warm afternoon while in Nice, and it is THE place to capture stunning photos of the famous blue waters of the Bay of Angels. You really won't appreciate how beautifully blue the water is until you see it from here, and you'll also be able to enjoy breathtaking views of the Old Town, the Port area, the nearby mountains and on a clear day, even the runway at Nice Airport.

I've never climbed the steps; take the free elevator which you'll find at the end of the promenade, tucked into the corner at the base of the hill. I prefer this not only because I *don't* get a heart attack climbing all those steps, but because the view is "revealed* when the elevators doors open and it's much better as a surprise. Turn left after the elevators for a viewing area over the bay, Old Town, etc. and then continue along the path/road for the smaller of the two waterfalls. Just beyond it stone steps will take you up to the main waterfall, which makes for stunning photographs on blue sky days.

Heading to the other side of Castle Hill you'll pass the ancient ruins of the castle and the main park area which includes some play areas for children. On the other side you have more spots to view the port area from, and the bathrooms (50c to use). There's a little outdoor cafe area and no shortage of spots to have a picnic, or trees to sit and lean against while you read a book.

Two bits of advice: don't go on weekends and don't go on a cloudy day. On Saturdays and Sundays this park fills with Nice residents (if the weather is good) and I find it a much more peaceful place on weekday mornings. Secondly, on a sunny day this is the most beautiful spot in Nice, but on a cloudy day, there's practically no point in being there. It's all about the views, and they just aren't the same without a blue sky to back them. When someone comes to visit me here I always make sure we do Castle Hill on a sunny day.

Combine this with a morning at the flower market in Cours Selaya and lunch in the Port area; by walking to the Port from here you'll see the war memorial too. You can then stroll back up towards Place Garabaldi and take the tram back to Place Massena, or keep going into the shopping street Jean Medecin. If you're thinking of taking a picnic, the Monoprix supermarket on Jean Medecin does fantastic take-away sandwiches, salads, sushi, etc. or you could buy some fruit, bread and cheese at the market in the Old Town below.

fab 360 degree views- but I did find the loos a little difficult to track down and you need to pay.Well worth the effort of the walk. Sitting and watching the planes landing and taking off is quite mesmerising!
