Owner description: The Masséna Musee, the architectural jewel of the Promenade des Anglais, evokes through its collections the art and history of the Riviera from the time of the attachment of Nice to France until the end of the Belle Epoque.

I was able to use the ticket from le Palais Lascaris here - I didn't realise that the E10 ticket can be used at a range of venues: Musee Matisse, d'archeologie, Massena, photographic, beaux-arts and the Galerie des Pinchettes.

Mamac was an interesting place to visit. It wasn't all to my taste of course but there were a few exhibits and paintings I really liked and many prompted discussion about the nature of 'art' and what qualifies as art.

The doorman was lovely and very helpful - if you have the multi-ticket pass you can by-pass the queue and there are combination lockers for you to deposit rucksacks etc in during your visit. The souvenir shop was disappointing and the staff there disinterested.

There are lots of stairs and although there is a lift it doesn't seem to cover every floor.

The mansion and lush garden already remind one of a grand era. The ground floor has a fantastic atmosphere with well preserved decoration, paintings, clocks, status, tables and drawers. The first floor has quite a few portraits but also old postcards of Nice and advertisement of events taking place in Nice. Lovely museum. (A pity that the girl at the cloak room was so grumpy.)

Our hotel,West-End, is next door to the Massena Museum. It is an impressive Italianate neoclassical mansion fronting onto the Prom des Anglais. it boasts 23 exhibition rooms and lush gardens. The focus of the exhibits is the history of Nice through the eyes of painters, writers and musicians who lived in the area.
The interior is beautifully lit from both natural and artificial sources with the upstairs rooms offering lovely views of the sea and the greenery outside. the gardens are English style which provide an excellent place to relax out of the bustle and sunshine of Nice.
As you wander through the rooms you will find a repository of paintings, sculptures, furniture and decorations. The museum evokes a sense of the heydays of the town and is a primer for understanding the city better. Pass through the Great Gallery and you will be astounded by the sculptures, massive paintings, bronzes and candelabras. There are frescos and and a visual treat as the founding families and characters who shaped this city, reveal themselves, via portraits.
Entry is gratuis, however English speaking visitors......need to learn French.....as all signs and explanations are only in French.
Tip....check out the bookshop/souvenir shop for its sophistication and unbelievable stock of readable material on this fantastic city. Bon Appetite

We went to collect our ticket and was told that it would be €20 for 2, contrary to what has been written on trip advisor. The fee included other attractions but we were not allowed to see this villa unless we bought the whole ticket €10 each. Unfortunately we didnot have the time to see the other museums. We walked through the gardens which were lovely and missed out on seeing the villa.

It took us three visits before we found it was open (it was used as an event venue the first time and merely closed the second time) Although entry is free, you have to get a card from the office next to the main building. The photos of the house, its family and the development of Nice were very interesting.
