“Fantastic Location”
Reviewed August 25, 2013

Firstly, the location is fantastic - So close to the thriving Old Town and 5 minute walk to the Promendade des Anglais! When we first arrived outside the hotel, we thought we had booked a dingy room on the first floor block of apartments, however we were warmly welcomed by the staff who are so welcoming and helpful - a major selling point of the hotel. The hotel was basic but served its purpose and as we had a room with a balcony, it was great to sit on the balcony, watching the world go by!
Breakfast was 7 euros and we had this twice during our 5 day stay - lovely continental breakfast with a range of baguettes and croissants etc.
I would stay here again and I would certainly recommend it to fellow holidaymakers!

Room Tip: Ask for room 8 - Has a balcony and facing the fascinating hustle and bustle of Place Massena

Nothing fancy but a five minute walk to beach and around the block from
Old Town.
Stayed in a room yet to be renovated but it was neat and clean. Room #2 - apologized for giving us non-renovated room!
Folks at the desk were extremely helpful making boat reservations and giving travel tips. You can walk -15 minutes to train station - or hop the tram.
Went during high season so expect to pay more for room.

My family of four stayed here last week for four wonderful days. We had never been to Nice before and I was unsure about where to stay. I booked this hotel off of reviews from tripadvisor and Rick Steves Europe 2013 book. We stayed in an updated room facing Place La Messena. It had two queen beds in it and sufficient room to move around. I was concerned about the safety of my family because I wasn't familiar with Nice. This hotel is very well secured with locked doors on the street and again to the floor of the hotel after hours. They give you a code to enter after 9PM. There are only two things I can say that are not positive. One was the hardwood floors in our room and in common hallway were dirty. When you walked barefoot in the room you could feel & see the dust/dirt on your feet. The room/bathroom was clean but for whatever reason, I know the floors are getting missed. So, bring some slippers or socks with you. Two, our room had no clothing drawers. Just one shelf under the television to use for four of us. It was a stretch but we managed with the closet and a hanging rack. The location was 3 minutes from Old Town with fantastic restaurants and bars. Internet was strong and included in the room cost for as many devices and you would like. It is a block to the ocean. A/C. Seriously a fabulous location! After exploring the city for four days and visiting the locations of the higher end places, I wouldn't trade this place for those. The hotel quality, location and price are not comparable. We happened to be there on June 21st which was summer solstice. The fountain was packed with activity, musicians and street performers. When we closed our windows facing out, we couldn't hear a thing. Great soundproofing!

The bathroom was totally redone and in good taste. We did have breakfast one day which was typical French petit dejeuner,(Baguette, croissant, jam, juice & coffee @$7Euro),but decided to venture out to the many bakeries and cafes nearby after that to take in the scene. They staff were very helpful and nice.

Room rate was fabulous for what you get. We paid $159Euros a night for the family. For this hotel in this location I cannot imagine a better deal and we will ALWAYS stay here while in Nice. I miss it already:) Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated room facing the plaza.

As many reviewers have pointed out - the Hotel de la Mer has a *great* location on Place Massena at the west end of old Nice. It's a relatively small hotel (~10 rooms) in an old building. It had the great feel of comfortable, clean, friendly, but no frills European hotel. I've also stayed in the 5-star Boscolo on the other side of Place Massena, at at the Palais de la Mediterranee a few blocks down the bord de mer; those two were quite luxurious (and three times more expensive) but rather soul-less. I loved how the stairtreads up to the second floor walkup to get to the Hotel de la Mer were worn by a hundred years of travellers.

Our rooms were very clean. We stayed two nights in an un-renovated room and one night in a renovated room - both were fine (the renovated room was indeed a bit nicer). The rooms were quiet - both rooms faced on the lively Place Massena, but the windows were well insulated against sound. And the people at the hotel desk were *incredibly* friendly and helpful.

Great Internet connectivity. Beds were fine but not luxurious. Didn't try their breakfast, since there are so many great cafes in old nice (a few blocks away) to sit, have breakfast, and watch the world go by.

We stayed here over the Monaco Grand Prix weekend as finding reasonable priced accommodation was non existent and therefore we were just trying to find somewhere where we wouldn't need to win big at the casino to afford our room. Even though we paid a premium I am very glad we picked this hotel. Very clean, great central location (if you get the airport bus it is literally 15 steps from the bus stop to the front door and the giant fountain is a great focal point to head for.

We stayed in room 9 which was overlooking the square which was a simple room but had everything we needed. The bathroom had clearly been re-done recently and was small but perfectly formed. The key code system to access the hotel when reception was closed was very simple to use and offered excellent security. The staff were very helpful and spoke english, a big help as my husband knows a little french and mine is shocking. You also get free wifi which is great if you have a mobile device with you.

Only downside is because it is an old building you can hear people coming and going in the corridors and sometimes through the walls. Not good when at 5am you are woken up by a guy pulling his suitcase across the wooden floors...but this is the experience in most euro hotels of this kind so was to be expected, but overall wonderful stay.

Room Tip: Room 8 has the balcony and room 9 also looks out onto the square

Spent two nights in this hotel. Friendly greeting and helpful staff. Rooms are small and sparse but very clean- new shower and entire bath seems newly done.
Best thing is a reasonable price in a prime location. Right on Place Messena, 1 block to the old town- 2 blocks to Promenade des Anglais. Definitely a recommendation .

We stayed at this hotel for a week on our way back to the USA. The staff was helpful - the bed was comfortable and the location can't be beat. The hotel is one flight up with no elevator but
that wasn't a problem. For the price IT IS REALLY WORTH IT!

Room Tip: They are renovating all rooms so you can choose any one.
