“No frills but fabulous location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 7, 2012

This hotel is in an unbelievable location with the beach, the Flower Market and Old Nice within an 8 minute walk. The staff were super accommodating and very receptive to our request to change rooms when we found that the shower stall was just too small for my tall husband (Room #1). For the next 3 nights, we stayed in Room #7 which overlooked Place Massena and we are still astounded by how quiet it was when we closed the window. The price/value ratio is a winner when you shop around for hotels in a comparable location in Nice. We arrived in Nice at the main train station and chose to walk to the hotel -- approximately 20 minutes. Without hesitation, we will stay here again when we are back in Nice.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of Place Massena.

Thierno and staff were mega helpful, very cheap, small but comfy. for e50 a night! Smack in the center of Nice. Does exactly what it says on the tin! I stayed in a room at the back of the hotel, although noisier i think i would prefder a room overlooking the square. Free wifi also a plus!

Stayed for 3 nights in a reconditioned room which was small and simple but tastefully done and with a beautiful hot shower. Continental Breakfast was delicious and although similar price than many of the local cafes was probably better value as we could ask for more tea/coffee. Staff were very polite and helpful. Location is perfect with access to both New and Old Town in easy walking distance. Public transport is very handy in Place Massena and we took advantage of the €1 bus to Monte Carlo.
(As we left there was a workman in drilling and plastering in the old rooms so perhaps they are renovating them all now.)

Half this hotel has well appointed and reconditioned rooms and half needs work doing on it. You need to ask for one of rooms 8-12 to get one of the better ones. Also, in spite of other comments saying get a room overlooking the wonderful Place Massena, I disagree. It is noisy, especially so at weekends up to the early hours of the morning when too many people have had too much to drink. See if you can get a room at the back. Not an attractive outlook, but quiet. Otherwise, make sure you take some earplugs in your hand luggage, otherwise you may well have sleepless nights. The hotel has an unattractive entrance but the welcome is good, the reconditioned rooms are excellent and the situation is very convenient for visiting old Nice. Try getting the bus to Eze village; 1 euro for a trip along a magnificent stretch of coastline is a steal.

Room Tip: Rooms 8-12 have been reconditioned. Ask for one of these.

i stayed a week at this property. the staff is very friendly and location is hard to beat. For 50-60e / night, you can't find a better value givin the location. Nice bathroom and bed. My only complaint would be the bed sheets. This is more of a flashpacker place for singles or young couples in the heart of town.

Room Tip: ask for the room with a small french balcony (they have only one )

I booked just a few weeks before arrival, so options were limited (usually rooms were more than I wanted to spend). Location is ideal….windows open to the beautiful Place Messina…old town is right around the corner…easy walk to bus stops (we took busses to St. Paul and Villefranches). Bed and pillows were very comfortable, but otherwise the room was not one of the recently renovated rooms and was a little dingy (tape on the door handle from the last few times the room has been painted, furniture and paint really needed updates). Towels were clean but they smelled so badly of mold air drying was a better option. My parents had an updated room that was smaller, but much nicer. The bathroom was small but typical European bathroom. Staff was very pleasant and really cant complain about anything else. My husband thought we should have spent a bit more for a nicer room. I must be more accepting of grubbiness because I would stay there again. Wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who likes resorts and spas….but to the backpacker or Hostel goers, the location and comfy bed outweighs the negatives. Didn’t try the breakfast, so cant comment on that.

This was our 4th visit to Nice over the years and we needed to look at a base for days out but taking a 'budget' approach. Having been somewhat disappointed in the past with "3 Star" accommodation in France we were - despite having reset our own expectations - a little nervous at what to expect from a "2 Star" rating. How lucky we were!!!
Having booked early in the year we were made aware that the renovated rooms were a few Euros more expensive and chose to go with one of them - well worth that extra bit. Newly laid wooden floors (not laminate), newly fitted & tiled bathroom and furniture made from wood (not chipboard). Reasonably spacious (given the age of the building), clean & tidy - it was the only room with a balcony (8), overlooking the wonderful Place Massena.
The staff were always helpful, courteous & respectful - nothing seemed to be any problem for them.
Everything we wanted is within a 5 minute walk - the promenade/beach, the Old Town (with the wonderful flower market), the main city centre (and maybe a 20 minute stroll up to the station).
Hopefully Thierry and his team will get the other half of the building renovated soon.
We would go back again - and will take one of "Trip Advisor Stickers" with us for them.
If you can't afford the Negresco then this is definitely worth a considering.

Room Tip: Until the rest is renovated - choose rooms 8 to 12 at the front of the building if you can
