“Budget hotel near station”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 18, 2012 via mobile

We stayed there twice. It was nice, comfortable and basic as you would expect from Ibis. The location is good in terms of its approximity to Nice station. But this area is a bit rough. The rooms are small and basic, but clean. They even have an outdoor swimming pool. The breakfast is quite a delight with very fresh croissants every morning. This is what we expected from a budget hotel.

Stayed 4 nights on the 6th floor. Room seemed clean enough and bed was reasonably comfortable. Shower room is tiny and very little space around the (King size) bed. The room had what I assumed was a combined wall mounted heater and a/c but the a/c function did not work in any of the rooms of our party resulting the rooms being very warm. OK, its Nov so open a window to sleep at night I hear you say, but then the hotel location on a busy and noisy street in a below average area next to the main train station means this was not an option. Assume the hotel had disabled the a/c function in all the rooms to save $$ in the off season. Would look elsewhere the next time.

Room Tip: upper floors are better

Stayed for 4 nights on business...not my choice and I won't be back. Main issue is location. It is beside the airport bus stop and train station which is good but this is a dodgy and noisy area. Dodgy bars, sex shops, fights and drunks. Did not feel safe walking back to hotel at night. The entrance is poor ....up an escalator, which is switched off at night, past the tramps and then into the hotel...not good. The rooms are probably like any other ibis but too small and cramped for me. The air con was switched off but room was hot but when u opened window shouting drunks etc prevented sleep. tv remote was manky. Breakfast was fine.

We are 3 travellers staying in double rooms for single use. We always check our rooms on arrival, using LED torches, for signs of bed bugs. Here we discovered bed bug faecal blood spots and trails on the walls and under bedside tables in 2 of them (we took photographs). The receptionist Cyrielle came up, confirmed our findings and confirmed that they do have a bed bug problem occasionally. They changed our rooms. Unfortunately, the new rooms also had bed bugs with more faecal blood spots and trails (photographs). The receptionist was too busy to visit these rooms too, but saw our photographs and accepted that these rooms were also affected, but there were no more spare rooms. Because we had booked through an internet agency, she could not transfer us to another hotel. We had to stay in bed bug-infested rooms, using the recommended protocol – sleep naked, place all clothing in our suitcases, put them in the shower area during the nights, thus not taking home bed bugs or their eggs. We took many photographs - only 5 are displayed here.
Overnight we were all bitten on our necks and heads and a further, more detailed, inspection of the third person’s room, on day 2, showed bed bug faecal blood spots there too (photograph). So there it is: 5 rooms out of 5, every one infested with bed bugs. It is our opinion that this hotel is a focus of infestation, sending bed bugs to people’s homes all over the countries that they come from.
We arranged with the receptionists for the director, Mr. J–M Deleris, to meet us the next day at 6 p.m. upon our return from our day trip. He dodged it. Reception staff told us that he had taken a cursory look in one or two of the rooms involved, declared them okay and went home at 5 p.m. He knew we had photographs to show him, he had heard what we had to say and he could not face us, so he disappeared like a scared cat. Reception staff Cyrielle & Linda apologised profusely for this as they had tried to encourage him to stay and meet us.
The mattresses and box-spring beds are covered with jet black material, thus making the tell-tale faecal spots impossible to see on the beds in the usual way! Adult bed bug faecal trails are occasionally visible in the corridors where the bugs go from room to room.
Upon our return we contacted the internet agency who contacted the hotel. They spoke to the same receptionist who had changed our rooms, but now she is claiming that the rooms we were changed to were uninfested which makes no sense because she had seen the photographs, confirmed the same problem existed here too, and had wished to send us to another hotel but was unable to because of the internet booking. Why would she offer this if the rooms were uninfested? On the second day, when asked if she would sleep in these rooms she replied, “No.” When asked if she would allow her parents to sleep in them, she replied firmly, “No.” Then we asked all 3 of the receptionists “So what are we supposed to do – we don’t want to sleep in them either?” to which one replied, “It’s not as bad as Marseille. They are worse,” while another checked the computer and told us that they employ Rentokil to attend every few months to deal with the problem. But Mr. Deleris was not inclined to call them in again because of our findings.
Every single point, fact and detail was established with staff at the time without argument. This was our first discovery of bed bugs infestation using LED torches and examining walls, door bottoms and the undersides of all tables, etc. We recommend that everyone should do this in future as this is a growing problem internationally, with hoteliers in denial and merely cleaning off faecal blood spots and trails in an endeavour to hide the problem.

Room Tip: Take LED torch and inspect under table tops &c for faecal blood spots and trails.

This hotel is located right by the train station, first tip is that on exiting the train station head right and walk 50m, we initially went left!!

My usual +/- review:
+
Rooms – Fairly new, quite snug but everything you should need for a few nights stay, room has air con which is vital in the height of summer.
Value - For about £70 a night in Nice is good plus your Accor points.
Transport links – Train station is next door and you can get a return ticket to Monaco for ~6e and takes 20mins, the tram is the way to get around Nice and is 2mins further walk on from the train station on the main road, catch the trams heading right to get towards the old town and the port, tram tickets were confusing so I only ever bought one during my stay and just used that. The bus to the airport goes from outside the train station and costs 2e, annoyingly you then have to catch a bus between terminals for easy jet flights.
Service – Pleasant enough staff for a budget chain, all spoke English
Facilities – There was a range of expensive food on offer, I’d give it a miss though as it didn’t look great.
-
Location – The area the hotel is in by the train station is that part of town, there are sex shops opposite the hotel so it gives you an idea of what sort of area this is. On both nights we stayed on the short walk from the tram stop to the hotel we saw fights on the street and these were not between drunks so I’ll leave you speculate, basically this is not a hotel to take the family back to late at night. During the day its fine and you’ll just find the sort of crowd you would do around any major train station.
Urine smell – The smell by the entrance is because the hotel is on top of an underground car park and there are steps to the car park by the main doors and guess what some people have done on those stairs, nothing some steam washing wouldn’t sort out on a reasonably frequent basis but seems Accor wont pay for it and neither will the council.

So there you go, take the above into consideration and don’t be surprised, if you have the money book somewhere in the old town or port or risk it, up to you!

Room Tip: All rooms will be loud if you open the window so just avoid the ones by the lifts.

Ibis Nice Centre Gare is an excellent hotel at a reasonable price. Situated virtually next door to the Gare SNCF and 200 metres from the tram, it is ideally placed for travel around the Cote d'Azur and beyond. Choosing a room on the 7th or 8th floors gives a (distant) view of the sea. There is an very good, small outdoor pool, and a restaurant which is open in the evenings as well as offering a substantial buffet breakfast. Vanessa, ably assisted by Linda, heads an excellent team at reception who are friendly, well informed and happy to give assistance. Of the many hotels in which I have stayed in Nice, this is my favourite.

We spent three nights there. As we had arrived by train the hotel was just a short walk away. We had to negotiate people lying about on the sidewalk taking drugs (we knew what they were doing as packages were strewn around them). A strong smell of urine greets you at the top of the escalator that you take to the hotel lobby. The rooms were clean and breakfast was cheap and adequate. Reception staff were disinterested and there was little evidence that cleaning staff kept on top of the job.
