We booked a 'privilege' room with a balcony and were pleasantly suprised at the size. It had a huge bed , a small table and two chairs and a 'day bed' and large coffee table. The bathroom was spacious with two sinks and the balcony had a table and two chairs and a sun lounger. The breakfast was standard buffet style though one morning there was a problem with the food running out and not being replenished. The location was good - 5mins walk from the main railway stn and 10 mins walk from the sea front. The rooftop pool was quite small and unheated but there were loungers and parasols for sunbathing and a changing room and shower. No restaurant, just breakfast.

We stayed here many years ago and had a rooftop room with a terrace, so we went of that again this time. We were actually upgraded to a suite with terrace - very nice! The rooms have been refurbished since then and are more contemporary now. Quite a lot of space, but our room was the last in the corridor (616) and was slightly disadvantaged by having a portion of the floor space taken up by the intrusion of the wall for the fire exit outside. That said, there was still plenty of room, but I suspect our "king" bed was actually a "queen" because of that. Bathroom was spacious too, with decent amenities. The hotel is well situated for the train station, shops and is only a short walk to the sea. There is now a rooftop pool and terrace, and a bar just a few steps below on the seventh floor. I believe it shuts end Sept, but it was a really nice spot to relax with a martini rosso of an evening. Overall, I'd recommend the Mercure and will most likely stay there again.

Room Tip: If on the sixth floor, avoid 616, the other rooms are bigger

I got an upgrade from a standard room to a Privilège room (609). The room was rather small. It had the minibar, wifi and the iHome unit for my iPhone. Not bad but nu much of a privilège. Hotel is two steps from the shopping street, 10min from railway station and 20min from the coast. Tram (very comfortable) is close also. Hotel staff was very friendly and helpfull.

Have just returned from a 3 night stay with my husband and our 2 friends . I have to say that I was very disappointed with this hotel . We booked months ago on a bed and breakfast basis and upon check in we were told that breakfast wasn't included even though we had the printed confirmation to show them . After several members of staff looked confused and 20 minutes had passed we were told that breakfast wasn't included !!! We asked them to call the booking agents and later that day we were told that there was a bug in the system and we had breakfast but no apology for their mess up . The amusing point though is nobody asks for your room number at breakfast so you could have this each morning anyway . The other major problem was our room , it was clearly not of a 4 star standard in actual fact the bathroom was only 2 star in my opinion . We had a cracked sink , mould on light surrounds and on tiles and cracked tiles on side of bath , the shower screen was not fit for purpose either . The bath did not drain quickly. On 2 nights out of 3 we didn't have the tea and coffee replenished and 1 night no maid service . This is something I wouldn't normally put up with and asked to be moved but the hotel was fully booked they also said it was a nice room because it was on the garden side which it was but it was also next to the lift which we could hear at all hours . Majorly disappointed as it was my husbands birthday and to add insult to injury our friends were upgraded to a superior room which was nice and of a 4 star standard . We had no option but to just get on with it . Last issue was my friend had fallen off a bike and we asked for first aid and after 5 minutes of waiting they returned with a single piece of gauze that clearly wasn't going to help , I was absolutely astounded !!! After these incidents I would definately not stay in a Mecure hotel ever again which is a shame because a couple of issues could have been rectified but the staff just didn't seem to care . Only plus points are the roof top pool area and the location being close to the train station.
