“One of a kind and quite an experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2013

Of course this hotel is an icon on the promenade of Nice. Great location, great views and we had an enormous room with good facilities. The hotel is fading a little around the edges and of course it is expensive in the bar etc, but there is nowhere like it so it is worth it for a one off. Service wise, nothing to write home about - these folks have seen it all and they are just going through the motions.

Room Tip: If you can afford it go for a view!

Haves stayed several times and never disappointed.
Our last visit we upgraded to the presidential suite, a lovely set of rooms, they even put a Sun lounger on the balcony for us. Quite funny watching the bell boy carrying it across from the beach to our room. The restaurant is delicious, as lovely dining experience, and the staff are superb, concierge so helpful. Reception staff all always have a smile and have great lounge skills.

Great hotel, you feel less a movie star staying here.

Me and my friends stayed there for about a week, booked 5 different rooms, all had different decorations, different styles, different sizes and bathrooms. mine was 110 overviewing the beach, neat and clean. beautiful hotel. friendly staff. the long walk to the old town didn't bother me. And just so you guys know, the hotel is considered one of the attractions of the city! and and..complimentary WiFI. I will surely and without a doubt stay there again.

Room Tip: sea view is ALWAYS worth the extra pay.

This is a grand old dame of a hotel. Both eccentric and magnificent. Myself, my wife and four year old son spent a week here in June. The building is of course the main attraction, oozing with history, grandeur and class. The entrance into the main ballroom will knock your socks off. The original artwork is all over the hotel, on each floor and gives the hotel real atmosphere. If possible try to pay more for a room with a sea view, we did this and it was magic to stick your head out of the window each day and look at the gorgeous sweep of the bay. The staff were friendly and extremely professional. But this is an eccentric and odd hotel in some ways. While it is very five star in its beauty, it has cheap and nasty toilet paper and doesn't even have hair conditioner in its bathrooms. Also be warned that it does not have a pool or fitness centre, so you are very dependent on the beach which is prone to rough seas on a pebble beach. I was disappointed that a five star hotel like this with no pool then charges 20 euro per person per day to use a private beach opposite the hotel. That should be included as part of the service. But all up this is an incredible and memorable place to stay.

Room Tip: Pay for a sea view, it's worth it.

we stayed in this amazing hotel for three nights at the end of April. Our room was on the top floor with ' partial sea view'. We had a small balcony and could see the city, gardens and a rather large chunk of the "Bay of Angels". We were pleasantly surprised by that view, and by the room in general. It was huge and luxurious and had a large glamorous bathroom as well...all sparkling and clean.. We loved staying here, and even thought the weather let us down the hotel did not!
The Carousel restaurant was great one night and pretty bad the next night, unfortunately......
The service here was not great, and the tea room /bar service was ordinary as well. The prices here were very high also . However, the décor in both were gorgeous!
The overall experience of staying there was truly wonderful. We loved the quirkiness and décor of the place, and it felt very special to be staying there. We felt the distance to town was fine, and had no problem getting to the 'old town' despite the rain. It may be a bit far if you don't like walking, but there are plenty of cabs, and they seemed relatively cheap.....
Room service was very efficient, but the food was not great.
I would recommend staying there, but go for a 'double exclusive room' with the partial sea view.
The reception staff and doormen were also wonderful!

Room Tip: We loved or room on the top floor with partial sea view.....it was a double exclusive room. Noise wa...

My wife and I spent two nights at the hotel in early June. We had a sea view suite on the top floor with two small balconies each of which had just enough room for one chair. The view was spectacular and the noise just about tolerable. The room was enormous with a large bathroom and dressing room. It had been fairly recently refurbished to quite a low standard and already wear and tear was well in evidence. It had a lighting system which required a degree in physics to operate. The colour scheme was enough to keep you awake at night; lemon carpet, orange furniture and silver walls and the carpet in the corridors made your eyes go funny! We had hoped for a more traditional suite and upon complainig about the colour scheme were offered the Napoleon suite but my wife thought the room was rather tired and the colour scheme of dark red and green too heavy.
Notwithstanding our disappointment of not getting the type of room we had seen on a recent Uk tv programme about the hotel we enjoyed our stay. The hotel is iconic and displays much of the history of the hotel in settings and furniture and paintings.
We didn't dine in the hotel preferring to get out and about but the coffee shop restaurant is quite amazing in terms of decor. The location of the hotel lends itself to exploring Nice on foot and you hardly ever lose site of the hotel from wherever you may be in the town.
Would we stay here again? Probably not because we both regarded the hotel of being more like a museum with rooms than a hotel.

Room Tip: The front rooms with view of the promenade and sea are a must.

Always a great experience staying at this unique establishment. But we are in 2013 and it does need to keep up with the times i.e. proper wifi access (not the existing snails-pace) in the rooms and a decent shower screen that prevents flooding the bathroom floor!!
