The good news is that the museum is free. If I had paid for this I would have felt cheated. Granted, I did visit at the end of long day and was feeling tired, but I found only a handful of interesting pieces in this museum. Mostly it seemed to just be drafts of his works elsewhere and an endless supply of paper cut leftovers.

If you're a complete philistine like me, the museum is a very useful way to get to know the wide range of Matisse's work which is thoughtfully displayed over several floors of this C17 mansion. Nearby are the Franciscan Monastery with its Italianate gardens looking out over Nice, the cemetery in which Matisse is interred, the Roman remains and the archaeology museum, so several hours can be spent taking all this in. The adjoining park has a refreshment room.

No charge for entry, simple museum with range of his art works.quite a few steps involved. Suits all ages. No cafe on site but toilets are upstairs. Use cafe in the park outside for refreshments, small range of food but coffee not bad at all.
Tai chi class was being held in the park anyone can join in.

I'm pleased I went. The collection of actual works is small, but there were some gems. I'm particularly taken with the cut-outs from Matisse's later years in Nice, especially when he needed assistance to shift them around the walls of his villa. There are some good photographs from this period and some good examples of finished works and one work in progress. It has served as a reminder to re-read Hilary Spurling's biography (in the twi volume version this time). The added treat was watching students use Matisse's works as inspiration for their creativity.
