it was easy to catch the train and it is a short ride to Tende. This is where the museum depicting the pre-historic cave paintings is located, wich is very nice, and the town itself is very old and beautiful. You can make several stops on the way, visit different small charming towns.

The train des Merveilles also goes from Vingtimille to Cuneo in Italy. Trains are every 2 hours and the journey is 2 hours. Cost - just over 7 Euros one way!!
This was an astonishing journey we did - recommended by an Italian gentleman - we got on the train at Vingtimille and went up in to the French Alps and the train stops at some stations that the train from Nice does not go to. You start and end in Italy but the journey itself criss crosses the French Alpes and finishes in Cuneo... Another writer has said make sure to stop in Tende and fully agree with that. Cuneo is about one hour on and is a very odd town. We returned to Tende and strolled around there only to find out that we should have gone there first! However for the sheer excitement of seeing the Alpes from the train it was all worth it.

We took the 09.15 train with the commentary which was clear and informative, and covered a range of topics. The views were marvellous, essentially the deep gorges and the variety of vegetation. Tende is certainly worth visiting as a centre of the medieval salt trade with picturesque streets and a fine view along the valleys and over the town. The archaeological museum with a brilliant recreation of the prehistoric period and its rock and cave images. There are opportunities for trips from Tende for those who want to stay longer. The one issue was the infrequency of the trains on the return journey. The Italian trains are not predictable in stopping. We stopped off at Breil-sur-Roya as we had to change there. It was pretty but not interesting or welcoming, so would recommend stopping at one or two of the little towns down the line, and just changing there. London Vanam

The train is very modern. The route is an engineering marvel. The mountains are majestic. The natural petroglyph Museum an educational treat, the town of Tende a living medieval town. A must. Leaves at 9:15 and you are back for dinner In Nice.

We took the 9.15 train (the schedule changed - it's 9.15 instead of 9.25 starting with September) because we wanted the guided trip. The explanations were interesting and we were able to spot a lot of things we wouldn't have seen otherwise, such as a small village perched on top of a mountain. The other people on the train were quite rude however - I'm assuming they did not know French and English (or they did not care), so they just spoke louder when the guide's commentary started, to drown her out. If you don't care for the guide, just take a later train...

We stopped in Tende and then took a regular train back to Ventimiglia in Italy, stopped there again, and made our way back to Nice in the evening. The train trip itself, without the stop in Tende, would not be very impressive, but the village is lovely and well worth the 15 EUR.
