To be fair...we didn't even stay long enough for them to take our order. But we could just FEEL something was off about this place.
All we wanted was a glass of wine and a view and to rest from hiking up and down the castle hill in the hot sun.
The place was half empty - I speak "tourist" French well enough to communicate that we were there only for drinks and for a view and would like to sit in the shade.
He suggested what we later referred to as siberia - an area of the restaurant far away from all the other tables, and without any place settings. No one was sitting in this area...it was literally at the edge of the restaurant (and with a very limited view).
We negotiated for a slightly "closer to the action" table and sat. We waited. For 10 minutes. A server finally came to ask us what we wanted to drink, but we were never given a menu, much less place settings. We asked for a menu. He brought one. And then another several minutes went by. By the looks of the menu this place clearly caters to tourists...(small selection of wine, margaritas, mojitos, cosmo's etc...you get the picture.)
Meanwhile we watched another couple be seated immediately in a prime spot -- the same gentleman who sat us conveniently popped open an umbrella, providing shade and handed them two menu's. The table gave them the perfect view of the ocean and the riviera. The table we would have wanted, if it had been offered.
Another five minutes go by and a different man takes that other couple's order.
I don't know who they are... or why they were being treated differently than we were...but we immediately felt like we were being purposely ignored. Like many on here have pointed out they come off as if they are too good for tourists in their own minds...yet are probably relying on the tourists for income.
We left. And wandered down the way a bit to the Quai Anglais Restaurant or cafe or something...where our server spoke five languages, was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and gave us prompt and courteous attention. It didn't have the same view or the same ambiance but I'd much prefer nice, genuine people to bring us mediocre beverages in a highly trafficked tourist area.
