“Absolutely Unmissable”
Reviewed February 22, 2014

There is a reason why there is a permanent queue at this place - they do the best socca in Nice. If you want to dress up for a sit-down meal, give this a pass. However, if you want to taste real authentic Nissarde cuisine, this is the place to get it. Skip the fancy restaurants and do it street food style, this place does it for a fraction of the price, and to a far higher standard.

Do NOT walk past without stopping, do NOT expect to find a seat (that's OK, it's far more enjoyable as a takeaway, eaten with your fingers in the nearby park while people watching anyway), and do NOT think you can get away with only one socca to share with someone else. My partner and I clawed each other's eyes out for the last bite, and had to rejoin the queue to buy another. It's OK, it's worth waiting 10 minutes for another taste of heaven.

The folks work hard behind the counter to keep up with the orders flying in, but they manage to maintain a cheery attitude, and were very happy to make recommendations. I requested for my pissaladiere to be reheated, and they very thoughtfully suggested I have it gently warmed instead of piping hot since the crust would go soggy at higher temperatures.

We even went back the next day, and found seats this time. We ordered a glass of red wine each, which went nicely with the food although beer would have paired better, in retrospect.

We also really enjoyed the pissaladiere and the tourte de blette. They sold out of the daube, but it looked insanely delicious too. This was the cheapest and by far the absolute best dining experience we had in Nice.

“Best street food in town”
Reviewed December 1, 2013

Great place to grab so local specialties and have a drink. The socca is the best in Nice although the line can be way too long on the weekends

“Long queues for socca”
Reviewed November 22, 2013

Half of the socca that I got was burnt but the edible parts were yum. The queue was very long when I went. There were no seats left and we had to stand. They were nice but not sure if they just overrated.

“Best socca ever”
Reviewed November 18, 2013

This place is more like local take away however food is just outstanding. Maybe it has no splendor comparing to other places but you can tell straight away from the lines queued up there is something special that attracts to it. The food could not be fresher. Socca disappears after few seconds - a true gem in Nice.

“The place to go for real Socca”
Reviewed September 17, 2013

If you go to Nice, don't leave without eating Socca, the chick-pea flour based crepe, made fresh in huge batches at Chez Rene. You might have to wait in line, but the melt in your mouth, fresh out of the brick oven taste makes the wait worthwhile. This is also perfect for gluten-free eaters.
