“The Spa is worth it!”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

A Very chic spa and lots of french clientele. Probably true as I was recommended this place by a local whose wife swears by it. I gave my own wife a treat for her birthday and she was thrilled. It's not and everyday affair for her but I knew some pampering was in order during our long vacation in the south of france. The feedback I got from her was excellent. She felt the whole world had been lifted off her shoulders and I'm not sure of the name of the treatments she picked, but said that they were much much better than back home. And she wished that something like that was just round the corner in our neighborhood. Ha! I'm glad the money was well spent and it was worth it to see how happy she was! Recommended! Perhaps one day, we'll try the hotel too!

Looking for a beautiful hideaway, away from the tourists in Antibes? Gastronomic lunches, cobblestoned streets, lavender fields? Tired of shopping on the Croisette in Cannes? ( I know, I never tire of that either) Le Mas Candille is a beautiful tranquil hideaway in Foodie Heaven, Mougins. It's comparable to Le Chèvre D'Or on Eze and other faves. Perfect for a few days of heaven.

4 glorious days in a delightful part of France, the hotel is located at the end of an Olive tree lined driveway within walking distance of the exquisitely French village of Mougins with its many restaurants and galleries, reception will happily arrange a golf buggy to take you to the top of the driveway which nearly halves the walk to the village. Our suite in the new part of the hotel was large, extremely comfortable, well equipped and beautifully furnished complete with a walk-in dressing room and private balcony with umbrella, sunbeds and seating. The views from the main pool area, its terraces and restaurant are lovely, all the staff were attentive and helpful, lunch by the pool was excellent. At busier times, finding a sunbed by the main pool could be a bit tricky but as there are other areas and pools so you are sure to find somewhere lovely to relax. We didn't try the Spa or the Gym but we did enjoy the jacuzzi and its views. The Management and their team were quick to provide information, offer advice and to resolve any queries or issues, for me the sign of a true quality establishment. Congratulations to Mark and all his team.
Will we go back? - absolutely.

Room Tip: Our suite in the new part was stunning.

We are nearing the end of a week long stay at le Mas Candille having spent our previous week very happily at another Relais et Chateaux hotel near Montpellier. First impressions were good as we drove through an avenue of olive trees to the main building where we were greeted warmly and efficiently. We have a deluxe room with a view over the grounds towards the valley and over to Grasse. It has a terrace with small table and chairs which works for breakfast though there are no loungers which is a pity. The decor is clean but not modern or of particular charm. All facilities are here - shower with overhead and body jets, partitioned off lavatory, scale, hairdryer , Molton Brown toiletries. The room is large with good wardrobe space and a comfortable sitting area. We were welcomed with a fruit plate and a carafe of Port which was not taken away after our first night but only when we had drunk it dry. One welcome addition would have been a Nespresso machine which we have noticed appearing more and more during our previous stays in hotels of this calibre. At this level we would also expect still water to be provided every day(or evening) instead of once on arrival.
The big pluses of this hotel are its open spaces and its staff . The grounds are kept beautifully and there are a number of places to hide away. It never feels crowded. The staff are helpful friendly and more importantly efficient. We hide away at the spa pool which is tucked away yet staff members make regular patrols freshening towels and asking if we need anything.
Staff recommendations for restaurants have all been excellent. We also had a good dinner zt the summer restaurant La Pergola.
This is managed without stiffness or undue formality . However you should be warned -none of this comes cheap. We were a little surprised that things here are so much more expensive than in a similar property just a few hours' drive west. No doubt it is a feature of the region.
We would recommend a stay here .

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room with a view

We booked this hotel for 2 nights on arrival from overseas. We were not sure if we would get to the hotel in time for dinner on our first night so we had to make a booking that did not work well on the Relais et Chateaux website. The person at the hotel responsible for booking did a great job of overriding the computer system so we could book a Discovery Package and a regular night and not have to have the 2 night minimum stay on weekends. I was already impressed by the service!

As noted by others the hotel is in a beautiful setting near the old town of Mougins, an historic village with a connection to Picasso who lived here at the end of his life. The town itself is charming though parking is a nightmare so walk from the hotel-do not drive unless you have considerable experience negotiating in French hilltop towns. It is a few minutes from the hotel to town and this is a huge blessing in terms of tranquility. You get all the advantages of the art galleries and sightseeing with none of the noise. The hotel is also up the hill from the new town where it is possible to get supplies, visit a bank and so on. The signage to the hotel could be a bit improved, particularly as you do a sharp turn from the main road to the road that leads to the hotel. In fact there are two options and the road is steep but keep to the right and you will arrive in a few minutes.

We had a room in the Mas behind the original building where breakfast and dinner are served. Our view was nothing special but we knew this going in. It was quite and we looked onto a hedge which blocked the view of the parking. The room itself contained a lovely poster bed and had a bathroom with nice shower and tub. Overall the room was excellent though not outstanding as a lack of any real view was not ideal.

We ate at the poolside restaurant which has a simply magnificent view. I like the modern art that decorates the pool area. We had a light lunch while relaxing at the pool (pizza and omelet) and the prices were about what I would expect at a high end hotel-not cheap but not crazy either.
We also ventured into town for dinner and while there are some nice looking places, it is very hard to judge what will come out of the kitchen and we were not that pleased by our choice. We were quite happy to be eating at the restaurant the next evening at Mas Candille. We also swam in the pool and used the small gym which is located outdoors. It is a private location and the feel of the air as you do a workout is a nice touch. They have squeezed a lot of equipment into a small space but there is no universal gym and no real space to do work on a mat. Otherwise I liked this space for a light workout.

One feature we particularly enjoyed was the Manager's Invitation for a drink on Friday evening. All the leadership of the hotel were present including the owner. It was interesting to meet him and hear how the hotel evolved and is evolving. Typically guests are rather removed from anyone other than the usual desk staff unless you have a problem so meeting the owner, the GM and the booking staff was a nice feature as were the glasses of champagne that flowed.
Breakfast was a highlight as the variety of dishes and service were first rate. An outstanding selection of fresh fruit of various kinds was most appreciated. They even had a station for making personalized crepes. The setting was simply terrific and we saw plenty of kids, older couples, business types deep in meeting and so on. Everyone was made welcome.

I will provide a separate contribution concerning the dinner but needless to say it was terrific in every way one would expect of a 1* Michelin restaurant. The only thing missing was a chance to meet the chef! Certainly the food was first rate and the presentation creative. At dinner we say couples, business meals and families spread throughout the restaurant. A beautiful view was eating top quality food made dinner memorable.

Congratulations to Mr Silver and his team. Everyone was welcoming and helpful and with a few small exceptions everything was close to perfect. We hope to return and enjoy the hotel and the restaurant.

Room Tip: I would pay the extra for a room with a view rather than one looking at the hedge and the parking lo...

The setting of this hotel is incredible, the hotel is beautiful, the rooms are great and the food delicious but there are a few things missing which did not ruin our stay but I am not sure I would go back.

First of all we were told this place was family friendly - it is not - my niece and nephew were the only kids at breakfast most days and they are allowed to eat by the main pool but not swim in it which my 8 year old niece was most offended by!

The hotel makes out that it will accommodate special needs but in reality, they couldn't even find soy milk for breakfast (which most 5* hotels have nowadays and they should not have offered to buy it and then not do it). I had to ask for my coffee 3 times one morning at breakfast. I was shocked given the cost of the hotel that freshly made eggs were an extra cost as well and I have stayed in many 4* hotels which have a far better selection at breakfast.

The setting of the main pool is stunning, but the chairs are very uncomfortable and the water was very cold. The jacuzzi was beautifully hot with a great view, but it is set to 10 mins strong and 5 gentle and cannot be changed. The smaller pool for the kids had the most comfortable chairs but again the water should have been warmer for the time of year and outside temperature. I also found it strange that this is the only pool the kids can swim in but they cannot bring food to it, and to order drinks, you need to call for service and there was not someone regularly checking that there were enough towels etc.

The spa area is great, i loved the hydrotherapy pool and the outside gym is an interesting concept but the equipment was all filthy and i had to clean everything myself before using it. If you have an outside gym, make sure it gets cleaned everyday.

I think this hotel is more suited for a romantic holiday where the seclusion of the hotel and privacy of the grounds is a benefit and I think they need to focus more on their customer service and then this will be a real 5* experience.

Room Tip: Request a room by the pool with a mountain view.

dear madame,

thank you for your detailed comments. I do believe Le Mas Candille is child friendly, the only rule we have is that children under 16 cannot swim in the main pool, as this is next to our poolside restaurant, I do not want unruly children to put off the diners.

the points you raise about soya milk and the extra cost for the eggs are valid, I will discuss these with the management team and and changes will be announced on our twitter and facebook pages.

your comments regarding the sunbeds are surprising, we re-covered all the sunbeds with new fabric recently and personnally i find them comfortable.

I will review our policy of not serving food by the small pool, it does seem illogical. Any change in our policy will be announced on twitter and facebook.

the gym is cleaned each day, however being outdoors, dust and pollen can cover the equipment quickly.

i do hope you come back and visit us again in the near future,

regards
