“Extraordinary museum”

In the small old town of Mougins, a British collector has created a fantastic little museum of ancient history mixed with modern pieces of art. Very interesting and tasteful.

“A gem in the South of France”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 8, 2013

This unique museum is close to all the restaurants in Mougins, so you have no excuse not to go. You will see fascinating exhibits from Egyptian, Roman and Greek times. My favourites were the Egyptian sarcophagi. The artwork on them was amazing.

There are paintings, drawings and sculptures by Picasso, Dali, Cézanne, Chagall, Rodin and others. If you are in the South of France, don't miss it.

“Hidden Gem Full of Historic Pieces”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 2, 2013

Beautifully situated in the village of Mougins, ca 20 min. drive from Cannes. One needs proper shoes to walk up the steep steps to where the Museum is situated, but is greatly and aptly rewarded with historic treasures from Greek, Roman and Egyptian Cultures. Lovingly displayed, it emanates the passion of a single collector who saw it as his duty to share all these wonderful historic treasures of armory. Other works displayed are those of eg. Picasso, Dali, Modliani to name but a few. Impressive the blue Venus by Yves Klein. Musee d'Art Classique de Mougins expertly displays the ancient and the modern pieces. Worth a visit. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.

“An unexpected surprise”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 21, 2013

This is a new (2011) museum built on one man's collection of Roman and Greek artefacts (specially scupture, armour and weapons) and modern art. The 3 galleries are fairly small but the presentation is imaginative with a great deal of historical information to give context. There is little of strictly local relevance but to find such a collection in Mougins was unexpected and pleasing. It shows how good a small museum can be and without state funding!
Go on Sunday and the entry fee is reduced from 7€ to 5€!

Many thanks for taking the time to post your review of the Musée d'Art Classique de Mougins on Trip Advisor, our visitor's feedback is very valuable to us.

Unfortunately it sound as though you may have missed a gallery, as there are four in total over the four floors of the museum.
We have quite a few artworks from artists that have spent time in or around Mougins such as Picabia, Man Ray and of course Picasso - in fact Picasso created the linocut on the 1st floor "L'Homme Barbu" in his studio here in Mougins at Notre Dame de Vie.

The reduced rate of 5€ was exceptional for the European Heritage weekend on the 14th & 15th September.

I hope you will come back and see the fourth gallery the next time you are in Mougins!

Best regards

“Musee d'Art Classique de Mougins”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 18, 2013

What a fantastic museum in the heart of beautiful Mougins. The museum has a fantastic collection of Greek and Roman antiquity but by far the best part of the museum is extraordinary collection of arms and armour. An amazing display of helmets is what makes this visit remarkable.
Of course the museum has a great collection of all other materials including a fabulous Egyptian collection.
But what made it even more fascinating was mixing antiquities and modern art all under one roof. Nothing looked out of place.
I was there with my wife and three little kids who didn't want to leave.
A must see if you are staying anywhere in the south of France.

Dear Simon,

Many thanks for this great review.
Yes the museum's collection of Greco-Roman helmets and armour is the largest private collection in the world!!
So pleased you enjoyed the juxtaposition of ancient & modern art - one can really see the artists' inspirations from the classical era - e.g. 'Temple' by Roy Lichtenstein displayed between two Roman cinerary urns on the first floor, to single out but one of the many unpredictable displays that can be found in the Musée d'Art Classique de Mougins!
Please stop by the MACM again the next time you are in Mougins.
Best regards
