“Great for the family!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2013

After an excellent lunch in Mougins we went into the museum expecting something quite small and old fashioned. It was the opposite!

Very modern, excellent displays, interesting descriptions (in English and French).

Great for kids - with exhibits like ancient Mummy's, Armour and Roman Artefacts. It was a very enjoyable couple of hours.

Highly recommend it for adults and kids!

Dear Sir,

We are sorry to hear that the museum did not live up to your expectations.
Allows us to offer you a guided tour the next time you are in Mougins when we can hopefully draw your attention to the richness of the collection exhibited at the MACM.

Yes we do have the largest private collection in the world of ancient Greek & Roman armour on the top floor of the museum, but the three other floors display art & artefacts from ancient Egypt, Greece & Rome.
These ancient themes and styles are echoed in the work of artists who lived in and around Mougins, such as Pablo Picasso, Francis Picabia, Jean Cocteau, Arman, Henri Matisse, Raoul Dufy and Marc Chagall, all of which are represented in the museum.
These works are enhanced by the splendid Roman portraits painted by Peter Paul Rubens, and the classical themes of Antoine Caron, Alessandro Turchi, and Frederick van Valkenborch.
Even contemporary artists such as Damien Hirst, Antony Gormley and Marc Quinn blend perfectly within the arrangement of ancient and modern that makes the concept of the MACM unique.

We have been nominated for 4 international museum awards in just the last two years since we opened, including the 2013 European Museum of the Year award, the only museum in France to be nominated. We have won two of those four nominations, one of which was against global competition.

If you do decide to give the museum a second chance we will look forward to meeting you then.

Kind regards

“A hillside treasure of treasures”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2013

This beautiful hillside treasure chest set in the heart of magical Mougins houses a truly mesmerising collection of exemplary and compelling artwork and antiquities through the ages. Ingeniously designed, with the most intricate detail and thought having gone into showing-casing each and every piece to really maximise their resplendence in these unique surroundings. Brightly shining medieval coins, the most fantastical of ancient Grecian helmets, an astounding Egyptian crypt of wonders, and complete with a haunting (haunted if tales are to be believed), statue commanding unspoken yet respectful gazes from his admirers. Each subject is as beautiful as the next. Level upon level of masterpieces old and new all accessed by a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory glass elevator lift! Wonder-pieces abound for children, complete with dynamic interaction plasma screens to get one and all truly involved in historic action. The Musee d'Art Classique de Mougins is a masterpiece of every age, for every age.

“A Wonderful Mix!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2013

This is by far one of the best small museums we've been to. It takes a lot of inventiveness (and courage!) to mix the ancient with the modern the way they do. Imagine a marble bust of a Roman emperor (original) and close by are a small Reubens painting of the same emperor and a painting by Dali (or Lautrec, or Chagall, or whomever). It's really wonderful. Also, when I call it a "small" museum, I'm referring to the building, certainly not the extent or the quality of the exhibit. There is so much packed into a small space, without giving the impression of being crowded, that the place certainly merits several visits if you have the luxury of being in the area for a while. I think one has to kind of sort it out on the first visit or two, then pick areas on which to concentrate for subsequent visits. We'll definitely be back.

Dear Bob,

Many thanks for this great review that describes the Musée d'Art Classique de Mougins to a tee!

Having the modern and contemporary art displayed next to the antiquities that inspired these works, rather than in separate galleries, broadens the visitor's horizons.

Glad to hear you'll be back!
