My partner and I visited last week and have good enough French to understand the digital commentary on the artwork - if not you may need some additional information. However, the debate we had was about the suitability for wedding ceremonies of Cocteau's chosen subject matter on one of the walls - a myth involving a massacre! Hard on the heels of the two parts of the Cocteau museum it was wonderful to see something so fresh but which was done fairly late in his life.

Really interesting English commentary tells you about the artist's love for the City of Menton and his total decoration of the Hall of Marriages, where every Menton resident must be married.

To see this you must enter through the Mairie/Town Hall entrance and turn to your left. You pay 2 euros and one of the nice ladies will lead you over to the Salle and turn on the taped explanation--unfortunately in French only. But as you sit and look and listen, most of it will become clear to you. Surely this is one of the most amazing places in the world in which to be married. Cocteau decorated the entire room in a rather surrealist fashion, covering the walls and ceiling with paintings drawn from myth and folklore. You may see postcards or reproductions of some of them, but they do not compare to experiencing the real thing. (If you are trying to get there from elsewhere in Menton by bus, the #2 Suillet stops pretty close by)

Jean Cocteau created his very own museum in the "Bastion" ( a fort built in the XVII century) which is built into the sea wall in Menton. I fell in love with the huge tapestry just as you walk in: It has a beautiful black background and is very unusual. His mosaics are what really spoke to me.

If you walk just to the right of the building, you will see his grave.
