Been to MENTON twice....the old town is beautiful and not to be missed...don't be fooled by the town which greets you immediately leaving the train station...thats the commercial centre, the old town is about a 15 minute walk away and winds up to the church and graveyard right at the top, with its incredible views.......a great destination.....

“Marvelous Menton...a Pearl!”
Reviewed November 1, 2011

The unpretentious & most physically beautiful town of Menton is a perfect base from which to enjoy all that the French Riviera has to offer. It delightlfully lacks the "fanfare" & the inflated costs of locating, in say Monaco.... & is also, well known to have the best climate of all towns on the Riviera. It is blessed with panoramic, azure beaches and amazing sunsets & skyscapes that so moved the impressionists, who depicted this region on their canvases. Besotting walks include the postcard scenery of Roquebrune Cap Martin, the impressive beach-front strip, where cafes lap the wet sand & fat seagulls hover overhead...and the ancient cobblestoned plazas of the "old town" area, leading through to "Garavan"...shaded with lush orange trees. A further mesmorising walk, soon finds you walking over the Italian border ... very likely after a chilled Pernot, or a paddle along the way. The big plus of Menton is its access to great (& very inexpensive) public transport ...for those not wanting to hire a car, like me, when travelling alone. Three train stations are conventiently dotted throughout the town, (originating from Nice , connecting to Ventimiglia, in Italy & beyond) with regular & very reliable public bus, services to many of the lovely villages, perched high in the mountains ...& all, well worth a visit. Monte Carlo is a short & enjoyable fifteen minute bus ride away with Nice only about an hour with a host of coastal villages along the route, everyone of which is a delight. Likely the beat bus trip in the world! Of course if you meet someone with a cruiser, day-tripping the beaches, becomes even more enjoyable! Christmas in Menton is particularly beautiful, as it is refreshingly, commercially "underdone." Christmas lighting in Menton is themed each year & is stunning!.The light posts lining the very long stretch of the "Promenade du Soleil" (& also the main road to Italy, which hugs the coastline) are replaced with sheek, illuminated Christmas trees. The Christmas market is a collection of small stalls with locally made products/souvenirs, foods plus cute rides for children. Visit in February & marvel at the incredible citrus festival that brings tourists from all over the world. Menton has a lovely offering of shops, fresh food & antique markets, good restaurants, beachside bars /cafes & historically significant landmarks & shaded plazas that make it a traveller's paradise. I intended to stay just one month ....though "fell in love" with the town & dwelt for three !
Menton is regularly referred to as "the Pearl of the Riviera"....& for very, very good reason.
