During a relaxing drive across southern France, we met a woman who said she'd really enjoyed Monton. We'd never heard of it, but with our computer we were able to check it out. Just east of Nice on the Med, a kilometer from the Italian border, Monton looked promising, as did descriptions of the Hotel Napoleon. Being less interested in an ocean view that a good night's sleep, we requested a room in the back, overlooking a garden/patio. It was a smart choice. Our room was spacious, well equipped, very clean, with a good bathroom , and reasonably priced -- in short, everything a Canadian might hope to find when travelling in France.
We promptly negotiated an extension of our stay. The very friendly front desk staff managed to juggle oncoming guests and we stayed a memorable 7 days. Our rate including a particularly good breakfast choice every day, not only the usual display of breads, croissants, dry cereals, juices and fruit, but bacon & eggs to order, with all the trimmings. Marvellous!
The hotel has limited but adequate parking, and we essentially parked our car for the week and, with my wife in a wheel chair, walked the mile or so between town and hotel.
The always accommodating front desk and bar staff recommended two restaurants in particular, one nearby, a high-end Italian restaurant (I forget the name), the other (Cote Sud) in town and more down to earth. Both warranted a return visit, which speaks well for the recommendations.
Visits to Nice, Monaco and other towns along the Riviera were easily made via the train system, which is frequent and inexpensive. Like (I assume) most towns along the Med, the focus of Monton is the beaches and shopping, both of which get a heavy play from the tourists, many of whom seem to return to the town on an annual basis.
We enjoyed our stay at Hotel Napoleon and would return in a heartbeat if we found ourselves in the area.
