“The perfect day”
Reviewed September 10, 2013

We were staying with friends nearby who had booked a day at the beach for two couples. This stunning original art deco hotel was a pleasure and I would go anytime the sun is shining. It has a little private beach ( no pool but who cares ) ; bookable sun chairs ; all day service ; a wonderful lunch ; a great place to watch people / boats / the world go by in Antibes which obviously has a tremendous history. The hotel is in Juan le Pins made famous by that old Peter Sarstedt hit "Where do you go to my Lovely " and there is no doubt that this is a nostalgic place. Not trendy Ibiza style or Cannes hipness but a place of style with stylish people.
You have to go if you are down there - we didn't look at the rooms but they look pretty good on the web. By the way, not cheap but that sums up the whole of the South of France at the moment.

We had high expectations for this hotel, but the only thing it left us wanting to come back for was the fantastic view. The rooms are small - even for Europe standards considering the price. We had a gorgeous view from both of our rooms, but the balcony is so small there is no room for chairs to allow you to sit and take in the amazing view! One simple request, please add an inexpensive hook on the back of the bathroom door so guests can keep their clothes dry while showering or to allow you to hang up damp towels and help with the requested suggestion to recycle towels. The bathrooms were not what we have seen in other 5 star hotels throughout Europe. They are outdated and could definitely use a little more attention to detail when being cleaned. We checked in and there was hair in the shower and in the bidet. Gross.

The beach area looked beautiful, but was very disappointing. The area is literally packed with rows of chairs and gets more crowded throughout the day as more and more people arrive. It was way too crowded for a place that attracts guests because of the view and access to the water -- especially since there is no pool. During our 5 day stay, the chairs were so tightly squeezed together on the beach that whether you want sun or shade, the parasol of the person next to you or in front of you will determine the amount of sun or shade you get! Literally there are rows of chairs just lined up one next to the other -- for these prices?. We encountered 2 nice people on staff, but overall, most of the staff (especially at the outside restaurant and beach) seemed downright surly and miserable to be there.

It is really a shame to have such an incredible location and potential for a luxurious visit, but not to offer the service or experience that should be expected at the caliber associated with the prices being charged. It is really too bad because we loved vacationing in the French Rivera, but will not ever consider going back to or recommending Belles Rives. I just hope that "the management team" starts to value guest feedback more than it appears in their previous responses to guest reviews on this site.

Room Tip: At another hotel!

Dear Guest,
Many thanks for your recent stay at the Belles Rives as well as for having shared your opinion with the TA Community.
We are very sorry to learn that you did not enjoy your stay with us and that some aspects of our service did not match your expectations.
Concerning the room, we have taken good note of your remarks. In most of our rooms there are hooks beside the bathrooms’ doors which are used for the bathrobes and, in case, for guests’ personal items. We will add them anyway in the few rooms where they are missing. Regarding the housekeeping, your remarks really surprises us since the service is always prized by all of our guests (even here on the Tripadvisor – check cleanliness in the scores). Anyway, we will inform our head housekeeper in order to avoid the accident in the future.
Regarding the beach, during the peak season it is a sought-after location for its views and magical atmosphere. It is indeed very popular and some days can be very crowded. Nevertheless, we try to give maximum comfort to every guest. Please accept our apologies if this was not the case. A formal briefing has also followed with all the beach team.
We can assure you that we pay attention to guests ‘comments, whether positive or negative. And for sure we regret the experience you lived.
We look forward to having the opportunity of welcoming you back. Please do not hesitate to contact us directly as we would be delighted to assist you personally and render your future stay a most memorable one.
Kind Regards,
The Management

My husband and I went to this hotel for the second time this August, expecting the same experience as we had had a few years ago: a romantic anniversary celebration. I don't even know what to mention or how to describe this horrendous experience, awful from start to end. Extremely expensive, they charge for every step you take (to paraphrase one of the recent reviews), and A LOT!! Half a bottle of a local Provence Rose costs more than the whole botle of the same wine here in London. Service is a joke! Beach club? Not a single positive moment, from the concrete "jetty" where lounge chairs are 'reserved' but some not used to being consistently ignored by the staff, who pretend not to understand you.
I could go on and on mentioning every single issue we experienced, but getting a response from the 'management' as I read in all other negative review, will not make any difference. In fact 'management' did speak to us a couple of hours before we left and gave us the same "Thank you for your complaint and sorry for the inconvenience", with no genuine apology or action!
At the end, the only thing I have to say is I will never, ever be even close to this disgraceful place again, and I'm really sorry to see such a landmark hotel disintegrate! And look forward to my next year's anniversary anywhere else!

We stayed at Belles Rives 4 memorable nights. The location and view are second to none. The Art-Deco style at its best.
The service was most attentive and professional.
Luca Enrico, the Chef Concierge, super professional and knowledgable guy, gave us the most amazing recommendations and tips about what to see around and where to eat. And it feels he will do all he can to make your stay the most memorable one.
Try and book room 78!!
Make sure you get a room with a long mattress, as some of them are only 1.80cm which could be too short if you are tall...

I have been coming to the Belles Rives with my family for almost a decade. I've had some amazing days and nights in the hotel and its restaurants. I'm sad to say, on this trip, I've awoken to realise many facets of the hotel are 'Emperors New Clothes'. For instance what I took for the charming lido, is in fact a concrete terrace that packs its guest in like sardines and charges them for the privilege. The rooms are stylish, small and the bathrooms a joke. The beds are short. The staff generally are friendly, but some seem officious and superior. Just try booking a front line sun bed. 'Non" These are booked for the entire season, even for hotel guests!! Buy two rounds of cocktails in the evening and you wont get change from Euro 200. Buy a sandwich lunch in the restaurant and they'll charge you an additional 10 euros per person fine, for not choosing something more expenses. A basic breakfast is 30 euros. Orange juice may well come in a glass with lipstick on the rim! Cap Antibes in July and August is packed. Some hotels here have been able to survive as 5 star, because of little competition and major demand. For me, I'm sorry to say my sweet Belles Rives, but our romance is over.

Dear guest,
First of all we would like to thank you for your fidelity through the years and for your review. Our guests’ comments are very important to us and help us to improve our service.
We are very sorry to read that this year your stay at the Belles Rives did not match your expectations. Please be assured that we have read your comments very seriously and the problems you underlined have been shared with our team in order to avoid them in the future.
Regarding the beach, it has always been since the 30s a concrete platform with a private jetty, rather similar to the Monte-Carlo Beach. We always suggest guests to reserve the places they prefer well in advance; the Belles Rives beach is always fully booked in July and August as it happens that we have a big number of regular customers. Nevertheless, we try to guarantee the maximum comfort to everyone. We express our sincerest apology for the inconvenience of the glass: this is not, of course, our usual standard of service and we can assure you it was an isolated accident.
We look forward to welcoming you back again, in order to show with evidence the quality of our five stars rating and service. Please do not hesitate to contact us directly as we would be delighted to assist you personally.
Yours Sincerely,
The Management

We tried out this hotel because we read about it in a magazine. It was an awful experience- We are definitively never going back there. I don't want spend my time writing about it too much because I just want to forget about it. Here the main issues:

- hotel (although it has 5 stars) doesn't have a swimming pool. The beach club is ugly and the "beach" doesn't have any nice sandy beaches, instead even in the water only disgusting rocks with sea plants on it. Eeehhh...

-It's unbelievably expensive and you don't get ANYTHING for it. Our room was a joke!
They charged us over 80€ just to lay in the beach club on plastic sunbeds for 3 hours at an ugly place. They tried to charge us for
Every single step we took :-)

- service is very bad- they either ignore you or are unfriendly.

- the "interior design" looks good in the description in the Internet, but they fool you because the hotel lobby and the regular room is totally different and tasteless. Never seen so many different prints and colours in one room- especially not ones that totally don't harmony with each other.

- we couldn't sleep because they played
Piano at the terrace till late in the night.

If I can give you a recommendation- go to Eden Roc Hotel in Antibes. All in one you pay more or less 350€ more the night (sunbeds at belles Rives included) but you get soooo much for it and its definitively a must-see. It's really worth it- believe me!!

Dear guest,
First of all we would like to thank you for your stay at the Belles Rives as well as for having reviewed our property on Tripadvisor.
We have paid attention to your remarks and we regret you did not enjoy your stay with us. Nevertheless, we would like to underline the following aspects:
- The hotel has been awarded with Five Stars following the official French Law on hotels ‘rating. A swimming-pool is not a compulsory facility a hotel must have to get a fifth star. Nevertheless, our guests feature free access to the pool of the Hotel Juana, our sister hotel, located at just 100 metres from the Belles Rives. Our beach club is one of the most historical of the French Riviera. Its location and decoration are universally appreciated and, to be honest, we would not define it « ugly ». It is composed by three spaces: the jetty, a hard surface terrace and a sandy part, very much appreciated by our younger guests. Regarding the sea plants on the rocks, we would rather say that this is the nature. We aim to conserve the flora and the fauna of our beloved Cap d’ Antibes, and our beach is a Mediterranean conservation area.
- As we state on our website and on all our sales documents, our beach services are not included in the hotel rates. In this way guests pay only what they really use. This procedure is actually shared by most of the hotels of the French Riviera.
- We are sorry to read that our service did not match your expectations but we are surprised but your judgement about our team, which is always prized for its friendliness.
- Regarding the interior design every piece of furniture is original from the 30s. Our aim is to conserve and valorise the Art-Déco authenticity of the building (protected by the French Historic Monuments Authority). The interiors have been lavishly restored in the last years and brought back to their original splendour. The lobby has been completely restored in 2005 and it generally causes a “Wow” in most of our guests. All our rooms are different and they feature antiques furniture as well as precious tissues. Sometimes we have mixed the prints and the colours according to the taste of the 30s. Ruhlmann style stripes and other motifs are combined with harmony and passion to detail.
- During summer we have piano music in our bar from 7.00 pm until 11.00 pm. There is no singer and the music is always smooth and romantic. We think 11.00 pm is an acceptable time for a sea resort hotel.
We look forward to welcoming you to the Belles Rives on a further occasion and, meanwhile, we remain at your complete disposal.
Yours Sincerely,
The Management

I have reviewed the Belles Rives before and eulogized about the hotel to try to counter the criticisms which seem so unfair in the light of my extensive experience of the hotel. Having returned again this year for a week with adult family( party of 8 ), including one 6 month old baby, I can report that the service, especially on the beach, is of a markedly higher standard than on other trips ( not to say it was particularly poor before).
The hotel is clearly unique in its beautiful setting and the enormous number of guests who greet each other from previous visits going back up to 50 years, is a testament to the loyalty that the hotel engenders. However, I can imagine that from time to time this must be putting off for new guests and I am sure this is due to new guests not being properly clued up before their visit. The hotel makes it very clear in correspondence prior to arrival that the beach facilities are extra ( expensive - yes - but clearly stated beforehand ). The important issue is to read the detail that is provided and to react accordingly. This means requesting, ahead of arrival, a sunbed either on the jetty or on the sun deck or on the front row or on the beach etc etc. - armed with a confirmation of your request you will avoid having to cajole the beach staff to grant a request , which may be impossible on the day. Likewise, be specific about table bookings for lunch, if you want a table on the waters edge, or in the shade or at a specific time, try to forewarn the hotel and again ensure that you have that confirmation with you.
The concierge is a gold mine of information delivered in the most professional and friendly fashion - the reception is manned by very professional, helpful and respectful young ladies. The mainly unseen senior management will address any query, worry or concern with a very helpful attitude but very often it is apparent that guests prefer to air their complaints/concerns in a very loud manner at the front desk, which causes much embarrassment and maybe, with the different language and culture this comes across as being aloof. I recommend that concerns are aired in private with management and a very helpful and friendly attitude will be encountered.
Taking the above into account, prepare yourself for a unique journey into 1930s luxury and charm and enjoy the experience of looking over the water from the upper bar terrace or Passagere restaurant and seeing the same unspoiled and stunning view as has been enjoyed for nearly a century.
It is still a veritable walk in paradise !
