Owner description: In the 11th century, the Lords of Fos settled on the top of theCasteou hill (204 m) and built a powerful fortress - one ofthe largest in Provence.Ruled by Charles I of Anjou, brother ofSaint Louis, King of France, a city developed below thefortress which is now a perfect example of a frenchmedieval village. But when in 1481, Provence becamepart of the kingdom of France, the royal city of Hyeresfell into oblivion, until the visits of François I in 1529,then Charles IX and his mother Catherine de Mediciin 1564. However, the city was devastated during thereligious wars. Later on, Louis XIII orderedthe demolition of the castle : the fortress was consideredtoo powerful, as the “League” of Lords was raising againstthe royal order.

“Niceold Town with avery authentic feeling”
Reviewed September 30, 2012

When I was a kid growing up in Provence, every town was a bit like that. Now they are mostly concrete and new buildings, but the old town of Hyeres has truly kept all its authenticity. A very nice place to stroll around, have a bite to eat, and take some photos here and there.

“Charming”
Reviewed July 16, 2012

Great views and fun exploring the narrow streets. The view at the top is stunning and the geography surrounding Hyeres is breathtaking.

“Hyeres vieille ville”
Reviewed April 24, 2012

Its a beautiful little old town build on a hill. Hyeres has also a beautiful and wild coastline one one side there is the harbour and a couple of hotels and apt, on the other side you can find wild birds and surfers. The contrast is exeptional about Hyeres. To visit everything I recommend to stay for at least 3 nights. The old town has charming cafes and restaurants and a good nightife.

“I loved walking through the markets on a Saturday morning.”
Reviewed December 25, 2011

We asked at a cafe about the score of the World Cup Rugby and they made us join them in watching til the end of the game.
There were some lovely shops and lots of activity with children playing and people buying their groceries, fruit and vegetables. Loved the Linen shop.
