La Vieille Bergerie
Ranked #3 of 9 Eze B&B and Inns
Reviewed September 15, 2009

Had such a wonderful time staying with Rosylene in this delightful B & B. Between a wonderful view and fantastic breakfast, this inn is where old world charm meets kindness and true joie de vivre.

The room is over 200 years old yet has every modern convenience you could wish for. High praise for this lovely setting.

The Cote d'Azur was the last leg of our trip in Southern France, and La Vieille Bergerie was certainly our highpoint in accomodations. It is perched high on the top the mountain that is home to Eze Bord-la-Mer, Eze Village, and Col d' Eze. No sea views from the room, but a short walk to the edge of the road offers the most spectacular views of the Mediterranean and village below. After a few average-to-good stays throughout our trip, La Vieille Bergerie was magnificent. The gardens and terrace are right out of a magazine, and the room has been renovated with such meticulous care. It was done in all white-- spotless-- and super clean. The bathroom was small but sufficient, and again, everything was eat-off-the floor clean. The bed was a queen(finally!) and super comfortable. Our hostess, Roselyne had such an attention for detail-- there was new bar of magnolia soap and perfumed wipes for us to use, as well as madelines set out on the front table, and the most heavenly embroidered, crisp cotton sheets imagineable. Each day we would be met with breakfast in the garden-- fresh baked croissants, cantaloupe, coffee, grapes, kiwis, rolls, and assorted jams. Roselyne would offer tips for the day, and each of her restaurant suggestions were spot on. We were met in the afternoons with a glass of cold Rose and waves from family/friends that were lounging in the yard, and discovered that she had come in during the day to tidy the room, and change our sheets and towels. We certainly felt like family. Roselyne went above-and-beyond when our rental car died, offering one of her family members to drive us where we needed to go and offered us her phone so we wouldn't have to rack up charges on our US-based mobile phones. Overall, our entire stay was just superb. Our location wasn't as central as something in Nice would be, but we couldn't find anything as charming in Nice (in our pricerange) and we found the location in Eze Village a nice respite away from the cities below (Monaco, Nice, Vence, etc... all just 15-30 minutes away with the most gorgeous drives down it wouldn't matter...) We found it was strange that this place isn't more reviewed on TripAdvisor. The room was filled with at least three full guestbooks filled with great comments, and Roselyne said that she had nearly 30 requests for our dates (Tour de France came by-- we booked 6 months in advance.) Either way, this place is highly recommended, and we would certainly stay here again in the future.

If you are touring South of France and planning to avoid somewhere terribly expensive; Eze is the place to stay on this part of the Cote D'azur. This charming little village is located between Monaco and Nice. The village forms a circular pattern around the base of the castle. I wanted to book the Chateau de la Chevre d'Or in the main village but I called six months in advanced and they were already full (book your hotels in advanced especially for the summer). In the end, I opted for the La Vieille Bergerie. The old buildings and narrow streets of Eze are very well restored, with high stone walls and narrow roadways of red-brick centered stone. The La Vieille Bergerie is exactly one of these old medieval houses built completely out of stone bricks. Although this small B&B has only one room, its very popular among frequent visitors to the area and it has already "4 épis au Gîtes de France" or 4 wheat ears? in English as a classification which is very good and well-maintained B&B. The B&B is located on the top Chronicle of the Col d'Eze and it has its own parking and gardens. A short walk up the hill brings you to the Park Forestier de la Grande which has breathtaking views of the sea and the village.
The gardens are lined with olive trees and the complete atmosphere is very homely. The host, Rose, is extremely friendly and whips up her own marvelous homemade marmalade for the guests' breakfast and little homemade olive handsoaps as souveniurs. The 200-year old room is large and cosy with arched ceilings and stone walls. There is a four-poster bed and a little fireplace by the bed. Children can opt to sleep in the second bed. The room was very well-maintained and someone came in everyday for abit of housekeeping when I was out. It takes only 30 minutes from the guesthouse to get to Monaco and 45 minutes to Nizza (big traffic jam in the city because of the road constructions). There is nothing much up the Grand Chronicle; but visitors can shop and eat at the village nearer to Eze. There are rows of shops and restaurants there. Ladies can also do some shopping at the Parfumerie Fragonard at the village but I preferred the one in Grasse because they had more selections.
My verdict: Go for this B&B. Nothing beats the price and it won't break your budget. Close enough to Monaco and Nizza and you can easily do a day trip. The B&B only serves breakfast so be prepared to have dinner in the village. The rooms are clean and nicely decorated but nothing compares to the warm host.
