This has to be one of the best burgers I ever had in a long time. There was seating outside under a marquee and if you are sitting there you were not allowed to smoke, which was nice. The tables outside the marquee was smoking tables. The food did not take long to arrive and the amount was just right. I didn't feel like I needed to eat and go and I would definitely eat there again, and would recommend this to my friends. The staff were all excellent and spoke very good English and helpful.

Decent burgers but they come with a large side order of attitude. Yeah, I know it's Cannes, where service often comes with a snarl and a "Drink bleach and die!" attitude, but if this company cares anything about its reputation and is serious about getting into Europe then they need to shake the place up fast because people are going to come away and, guess what, slag them off on TripAdvisor.

It's a new branch but the girl at the counter (the till receipt says 7 ALEXIVAR) was more interested in flirting with the guy ahead (he was cool, I'll give her that) and then chatting with her friend. When I had to wave to get her to focus, she pretended she did not understand "Un Royal et un Coke Zero" (my French is fluent, by the way). I then get a thousand yard stare and she makes me repeat the order in English (That would be "Royal and Coke Zero", then. Yeah, I can see how faraway that is from the French). I come to Cannes every year for the Festival, as part of the press corps, I know these local games by heart and don't appreciate them.

Upstairs a group of staff, including at least one American, were on break. No problem. So just let the tables pile up with uncollected cups and trays, why don't you? The server kept bringing people the wrong orders or half an order or one couple getting their orders separately, so something wasn't right downstairs either. She had a big tray to bring them up, but lacked the visual skills or intelligence to take used cups etc. back downstairs with her. My order came without the drink. I asked one of the 'resting' staff where it is (the lady went downstairs to get it for me; appreciate that) but then lectures me about how I should have picked it up to take with me. Well, I would have had 7 ALEXIVAR informed me that's how it works. Hint: how about you take this person off front of house, if not the payroll entirely?

None of the staff wear tags and trying to find out who is in charge... forget it. In any event, try complaining in a French restaurant and see how far it gets you. At which point: I am not anti-French, I just want decent, polite service and an acknowledgement that I am paying money here so, yes, some friendliness might also be included, along with basic competence.

I went to the Steak 'n' Shake website, which does not even list the Cannes branch. As for contacting the company by email, try doing it when you don't live in the States, because it will not accept overseas addresses and contact numbers.

Okay, so now I'm pissed off enough to go to TripAdvisor and share the experience. My friends Carlo and Minna live in Cannes, told me the place would turn French within weeks after the American staff left. Guess what? It's happened already and faster than they predicted: both have had poor experiences after such a great start, as well. Congratulations, Steak 'n' Shake, you're now as bad as the McDonalds across the road and in record time too, but at least they are cheaper.
