“New and clean”
Reviewed February 15, 2013

This place seemed relatively new. The rooms are very big and comfortable. Breakfast is very good and the staff is nice. There is an indoor pool and spa which I didn't have the chance to use, unfortunately.

First things first, the reception staff are friendly and as helpful as they can be but they can’t help the fact that this ‘Four Star’ hotel is not quite a true 4****. We stayed there five nights so had plenty of time to observe and reflect.

The hotel re-design is beautifully thought out but not always carried out to the highest standards. The ceiling in reception is rather shoddy, the ground floor toilet doors have not been painted yet, one of the lift needs a total refurbishment and the (red) carpet on our floor was stained in places.

The bathroom is rather nice but impractical. No hooks for bath or hand towels. The shower tray was slippery and did not drain properly which meant that, if you are the second person to have a shower or set the shower at its maximum, there’ll be water everywhere (the partition could be larger to protect the rest of the bathroom from splashes). No wonder the shower head is angled towards the wall: when it isn't, the water splashes all the way into the corridor if the bathroom sliding door is open. There’s no shower cap so I had to go and buy one. There’s no shelf in the shower when one can put a bar of soap or a bottle of shampoo, so they’ve got to go on the floor.

There’s a kettle but its cord barely reaches the plug (you have to unplug the TV to switch the kettle on). The room could do with more plugs by the desk. It’s a nice touch to include tea/coffee making facilities. However, you only get two polystyrene cups, two tiny cartons of milk and that’s your lot although by day 3, the (lovely) maid, having noticed that I often had coffee in the room whilst working, offered me some extra milk cartons and set off shampoo, shower gel and soap on a nice tray for us. Things weren’t so good with another maid who would forget to replenish either the soap, shampoo or coffee sachets and only leave small bath towels in the bathroom... tiny things but important nevertheless.

There’s no ‘proper’ glass to drink out of in the room, despite the fact there’s a minibar. Talking of which, the people who check the minibar just knock lightly on the door and barge in, which was nearly very embarrassing as my husband had just come out of the shower at the same time. A bit less haste would be good.

The in-room wifi is rather weak and keeps losing the signal. Not very good when you’re trying to work. It’s better in the lobby but still not powerful enough or set up properly to allow access to ftp sites, which meant there was no way I could upload files throughout our stay.

There were fingerprints on the wardrobe and the room door, which should have been attended to but weren’t. The room already needed a coat of paint despite the recent refurbishment.

The place can be noisy if you have a room overlooking the street and we could hear every word of our neighbour’s phone conversation (he wasn’t shouting at all, just speaking normally). It’s quite possible that rooms at the back are quieter.

We missed the buffet breakfast on our first morning but went downstairs to try and have the express breakfast (hot drink and pastries) which is available until noon. There were some pastries left over from breakfast but no-one at the bar and we weren’t able to have a coffee at all. It was fine on the next morning and even better on the fourth day when a member of staff brought my husband a coffee and asked if we’d prefer a cappuccino.

The small pool is pleasant but treatments seem rather expensive. The gym seemed to be very popular.

What drove me mad was an intermittent noise in the corridor every 4 to 10 minutes (something switching itself on, I never ascertained what it was), all day and night which was really irritating.

The owners of this place need to start thinking about what guests would appreciate and how to make their stay more agreeable. Hooks in the bathroom, more practical showering arrangements, more milk/coffee in the room and investigating corridor noises, for example. This hotel could be exemplary but at the moment, despite the delightful staff, it lacks some small touches to vouch for its 4 stars. However, if they take these small points into consideration, it probably could easily be one of the best 4 star hotels in Cannes.

Room Tip: Most rooms have showers so if you prefer a bath, make sure you ask when booking

Excellent experience at Montaigne hotel. I booked a deluxe room which was very spacious. Besides the sleeping area there is a small table with two chairs. Free and fast wi-fi. Good even the bathroom (with bath) and equipped with a hairdryer (which is a great advantage for women).
The hotel also has a spa and a pool. The spa is a very organized and there are various packages of massages..but it was too crowded.
The breakfast was good. The hotel has also a restaurant with good food and good value. It 's good alternative to other restaurants in the area.

Stayed here on a New Market Holiday. Nice chic boutique style hotel. Pleasantly surprised by continental breakfast which included the best scrambled egg I have ever tasted. Cereal, breads, jams, cheese and salad and croissants but no fruit which was a shame. Bedroom was roomy and clean and the beds were comfy although it would have been nice to have had a second pillow. Safe was a bit odd as it wasn't secured to the wall but I guess it would be heavy to carry away! Just wallowed in the hot bath so cannot comment on shower. We were unable to use the pool as we were told we had to wear the robes and slippers in our wardrobe but we did not have them provided in our room-bizarre! I can reiterate from a previous review that the lifts did not get hoovered the whole time we were there. The staff were quite friendly. 10 minutes walk from town and beach which was nice. Our room was very quiet and it was nice to have a few English channels on the flat screen TV. We enjoyed our stay here and would recommend this reasonably priced hotel.

Just back from a week at this hotel and having been told this was a 4* hotel, newly refurbished, I must say it fell well below expectations. In fairness the room was clean and the hotel is situated in an easily walkable distance from all the amenities, however we had three power cuts on our floor, the bathroom floor was tiled and painted, but the paint was being blasted off the floor by the shower. Doors on wardrobe and bathroom were old and battered. Worst of all was the constant smell of sewerage in our room and by the end of our stay the toilet ran constantly. The lifts were impossibly slow and were hoovered only once throughout the week. The bar was rarely attended, but the piece de resistance was the breakfast. One cereal, a type of bran flake; no fresh fruit of any description, and the 'hot' water for tea making was never more than luke warm. That was when it was available. Most mornings there was none, or the hot water jug was full of coffee despite its label. Staff were rushed and uncommunicative and conflicting information was given to several members of our party regarding where and what they should be eating. Clients were asked to pay for milk sachets for their room if they used the 2 they were given at the start of their stay. If you just want a convenient place and a clean bed, it's fine, but don't expect 4* treatment

We just finished a two day stay at the clean newly renovated hotel. Our room was on the first floor and had a small balcony that the higher rooms did not. The bed and bedding were excellent. The bathroom was clean with all the amenities. The only thing odd was there were no hooks or towel bars in our room that were outside the shower! The pool and steam room were nice after a long hot day. The hotel is close to the train station and my wife and I both in our 50's had no problem rolling our luggage there in about 5 minutes. Nancy at the front desk recommended Le Valentino restaurant two short blocks away. This place is great for a casual inexpensive meal. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: First floor facing back of hotel

This hotel is really good value for the area in comparisson, youll be hard pushed to find better for the money. Rooms are a good size and well equipped with really nice showers with body jets, tv with plenty of uk channels if this is your thing, fridge, tea coffee making facilities and my biggest bug bear "quiet air conditioning". Lifts are quite small and the stairs are useless especially if the is someone coming the other way, giving way is near on impossible so wait and take the lift. Reception staff are friendly and the area is nice with a small bar area and a funky outside terrace.

The hotel is well located for the centre Being just behind the station and about 10 mins walk from the marina...

Don't be put off by other reviewers.
