We were lucky to secure a reservation at Le Maschou and loved its old style decor and menu; albeit a set menu which most definitely had carnivorous leanings. We were amused by and appreciated the huge salad basket which had mushroom, tomato, endive, purple cabbage and eggs, yet somehow left out the lettuce, given that meat and more meat were due to come as main course. The lamb and chicken were excellent; especially the lamb which was not fatty. And the lemon tart and chocolate mousse hit the spot at the end of a most enjoyable meal.

Step back in time to eat at this "old" Cannes favourite. Walking up the narrow street to this venue is a treat in itself. the tiny street is filled with bars, restaurants, all brimming with life. Entering the dark cave and being squeezed into one of the small tables is fun and certainly felt like we were experiencing a traditional french meal. The food is quite simple and not suited to those that dont eat meat. The huge vegetable basket with dipping sauces is a local tradition so Im told and is a great way to start. Once chosen, the mains come out on a large wooden platter so works well for everyone to share a bit of everything (we were a group of 8). The food was wonderful, the service and atmosphere were very good. Like everything in the south of france, not cheap, but worth the trip. I would go back.

Heard that the chicken entree was excellent but since my fiancé and I do not eat meat we were served an omelette for our main. I think Maschou is amazing if you eat meat but stay away if you don't. Try Gavroche up the street instead.

This is a restaurant that seems to divide opinion and I think you'll either like the place a great deal or you won't like it much. It's a good fun place and we visited for dinner with some friends and their sons who were in their late teens and this youthful input enhanced our evening: this is definitely not a place for a romantic evening for two. The menu (or food – there isn't really a menu) hasn't changed for many years so if you don't like it you're a bit stuck. Some good bread comes first then a plate of melon and Parma ham. The huge basket of vegetables is strange. Raw carrot, cauliflower, red cabbage etc. is ok but does seem a little eccentric. However you can pick an egg, an avocado, some tomatoes, some celery and so on and make a more conventional salad. Other reporters have commented on hygiene aspects of this course and you certainly don't know how many tables the basket has been round or how many customers have handled the food. If this bothers you this place isn't for you. The meat course is a selection of beef, lamb or chicken cooked in their wood burning oven. It comes on a plate so if there are, say, four or more of you it's best to order a selection. The meat was cooked as ordered (one of our party ordered well done beef whereas another wanted it rare and this is how it came out). Puddings were excellent. Wine was good and reasonable value for this part of the world. The place is very small and you are packed in so it's possible to get quite intimate with perfect strangers. This is a cult type of place and we liked it but I have several friends who would dislike it. My advice is to read a few reports from across the range of opinions to get a feel for whether or not it's for you. If it is you'll have a fun evening.

It's always a pleasure to eat in this very tiny atmospheric restaurant. You have to book well ahead to get a reservation especially in the summer but it is worth the wait. The meat is all cooked in a wood fired oven and the large vegetable basket is fantastic. We have come here with family and friends for many years and never fail to have a good evening and wonderful meal.
