Catherine and Patrick go out of their way to make this a truly special holiday. We will definitely go again and again. Catherine makes so much effort to ensure breakfast is a home made affair. The place is full of character with a fascinating romantic history. There are not many places where you can say you have stayed where the greats such as Sinatra and loren have stayed.

We have been regulars at this lovely bed and Breakfast for 7 years now. Owners Catherine and Patrick Bouvet really go out of their way to make you feel at home, both in their home and in the region. The 4 bedrooms of this circa 1900s house are quaint, spotless and comfortable, with modern bathrooms, air conditioning and views of the sea, castle and village rooftops. Two of the rooms are smaller but have outdoor terraces and spacious bathrooms. The two larger rooms/suites have indoor loggias, perfect as an extra sitting room or a sleeping area for children. This typical "maison Cagnoise" used to belong to 40s singer Georges Ulmer, and Catherine is happy to show her guests photos, newspaper clippings, or even tell stories passed down to her from the late Ulmer's wife, Betty. Breakfast, which is served on the sea-facing terrace during the warmer months or in the cozy living room during the cooler months include croissants, fresh breads served with Catherine's homemade jams, as well as fruit, yogurt, cheese, juice, cafe-au lait and/or tea. Haut-de-Cagnes is a charming albeit unpretentious medieval village, which has been spared (thankfully) the infestation of kitsch tourist traps that have plagued some of the other villages in the area. (St. Paul-de-Vence is 7 km away and you can walk there.) At the top of the village, the 14th-century castle dominates the main square. It is now a museum, housing dozens of portraits of 30s nightclub singer Suzy Solidor which she commissioned by artists such as Tamara de Lempicka, Foujita and Jean Cocteau. Other sites worth visiting are the chapel Notre-Dame-de-Protections (15th century) and the Church of St. Pierre, (16th century). There are several good restaurants only steps away. Try Michelin-starred Josy Jo's just next door, Entre Cour et Jardin and Fleur de Sel on the Bourgade, as well as several informal dining establishments on the main square just at the foot of the castle. There are only a few high-quality boutiques and artists' studios located within the winding cobbled alleys - (Try Esty's jewellery -www.esty.net or Terraio Poterie.) Just outside Terrasses du Soleil, you can hop on a free shuttle bus which will take you down to the modern Cagnes-sur-Mer. (Place Bourdet). From there you can visit the local market or shops, walk to the sea front, visit Renoir's house in Les Collettes - now a museum containing some of his painting and personal artifacts, spend time in Cros-de-Cagnes - originally a 19th-century fishing village, or, take the public transit bus to Nice, Cannes, Vence, Grasse, or other destinations. A car is needed if you intend on exploring the back country which is definitely worth doing if you enjoy discovering quiet perched villages or hiking in the countryside. Parking in Haut-de-Cagnes can be a bit of a headache, but the Bouvets will save you a spot in front of their house when you first arrive. This is a medieval village after all, so do be prepared to park farther away if you plan to use your car frequently while staying there. (Parking is very limited and not reserved - even for residents. There is a pay-garage close by.) Terrasses du Soleil is a gem of a bed and breakfast accommodation. Every time we stay there, we feel at home.
