“Sun-Hat Caravans were great”
Reviewed September 16, 2008

I found Sun Hat when looking at www.holiday-lettings.co.uk. Sun Hat is run by an English couple, who own 5 or 6 caravans on the Camping L'Eden campsite in Biot, France.

The caravans were well-equipped and clean. There was a double room, a twin room and sofa beds. I would recommend them for a couple who have 2 children but 4 adults would find it a squeeze as the twin room is quite small with very little storage. The kitchen was very well equipped indeed, with all utensils you would need, a gas hob, oven, grill, kettle and microwave. The bathroom has a sink, 2 cupboards, shower and flush toilet which are connected to the main water supply (so no need to keep changing water barrels etc!) The living room had an l-shaped sofa which could be used as a bed for small children, a dining table with 2 folding chairs and a TV with a DVD player (only DVDs can be watched on the TV as it does not have an aerial, but we found we did not try to watch the TV anyway as we were always out and about!). Outside the caravan we had a parking space and a concrete patio which had a table and 4 chairs and parasol to shade from the blistering 86 degree september heat! There were also some clothes airers for drying your washing/swimming costumes.

Liz and her husband who run sun hat actually stay in their own caravan on-site and were available any time we had questions. They also hire out fans (by the week) and BBQs (per night) at an extra cost. The BBQs came equipped with charcoal, fire lighters and tongs which was great.

Camping L'Eden is a very lovely site and is apparently much quieter than its sister site, Pylon. It has a small bar/shop at the entrance, with a childrens play area. The bar does really nice food - nothing fancy but on the menu but what is on there is cooked to perfection. There is a very decent-sized outdoor swimming pool which we loved, and a small gym (which we never used!) There are also toilet and shower facilities for those camping in tents at the site, and laundry facilities also.

Biot nearby is a lovely village and we definitely recommend visiting it. It is a mile or so by foot but is up a very steep hill. It can also be accessed at the top of the village by car. Also nearby is Biot Verrerie (glass-blowing factory) and Marineland/Aquasplash and some other theme parks are only 1 mile down the road.

We would definitely stay there again!

Our stay at Camping Eden far exceeded our expectations. The site is small, very relaxing, quiet and well kept. The vans (mostly holiday homes owned by French, Dutch and Engish, with a few rented vans) are set out in little lanes with garden space and an abundance of trees and shrubs. There is a swimming pool, boules court, playground and an excellant restaurant serving superb quality food at very reasonable prices, with plat de jour approx 9 euro and 3 courses for 17.

Biot village, accessed by local bus passing the campsite (only till early evening) or a steep climb, is stunning and well worth the climb, with a variety of restaurants, shops and a weekly market. Biot train station is 20-25 minutes walk with regular (and on time!) trains to Monte Carlo, Cannes, Nice, even Italy, and other villages/resorts along the way ( e.g.Eze, Villefranche) all at very reasonable prices, making sightseeing really easy and cheap. The local bus also visits Antibes and Valbonne.

Liz and Jeff who rent out the vans are very frienly and helpful and operate a pick up service from the airport which makes it even easier for those travelling without a car. Unfortunately, our holiday was cut short due to a family bereavement, but Liz and Jeff arranged flights for us and took us to the airport at very short notice for which we were extremely grateful at such a difficult time. We have already booked for next year as there are still many places for us to visit in the area, and it is the ideal place to relax in between sightseeing, and to get away from the busy lifestyle we all seem to lead!

Good Points
Camping Eden is a really well run, small, French family owned site perfectly located for Cote D'Azur. Lots of different nationalities on site which is good. Absolutely fabulous restaurant with a good menu and also a different plat de jour each day. (The plat de jour was 9 euros - which is really good value). Sun Hat (Liz & Jeff) own nine of the 165 mobiles and cater well for their clients.

Bad Points
Couldn't really find anything to write here.

General Comments
Although at first we were a little worried when we read a rather negative comment about Camping Eden on another website, we can only say that the campsite is first class, clean and well run, and more than met our expectations. Lots of people own their own mobiles (rather like second homes) and live in them during the summer, so the atmosphere is really relaxed but the security is still very high, as each car is watched by security cameras before the entry gate is lifted. The site has lots of trees and flowering plants which make for a pleasant environment (and provide much needed shade at times too!). The pool is lovely and well maintained - and in September was relatively quiet - maybe a few more sunbeds and parasols around the poolside would not go amiss though.

And the local area? What can we say apart from the fact that if we got chance, we'd be back there tomorrow! Antibes, Cannes, Nice, and even St Tropez are within easy reach. Also venturing up the mountains to Gourdon is a fabulous trip. The beach close to the campsite (a couple of km) is pebbly but fabulous. And slightly further there are sandy beaches too. Biot train station is a similar distance away (about 2km) - and trains are plentiful and run along the coast to Monaco, Italy, and the other way to St Tropez etc. Buses pass the site frequently too.

To sum up - a gem of a campsite in a perfect location. We'll be back next year.
