It's tucked away in a courtyard but if you can find it and it's open (evenings Friday and Saturday only) you will be rewarded. OK we were one of only two tables occupied last night but the service was excellent. And I enjoyed foie gras, really super red tuna and pannacotta with chestnut chantilly. The wife was similarly delighted with her aubergine terrine and ombrine (exactly what is that in English?). Only negative: no French beer but that's minor.

We ate at Metropolitan while we were in Avignon. If we had not been recommended it, we would not have found it. Immediately we knew we wanted to eat there when we spoke to the chef and when we asked about a menu, he said he was still thinking about the menu for dinner, but gave us an idea of what he would be cooking later if he could get all the fresh ingredients. Really delicious food in a beautiful atmosphere.

Three ways to stumble over this somewhat secluded restaurant: a) you went to visit the great contemporary art exhibition of Collection Lambert... (because it is located in the magical courtyard of this absolutely splendid 18th century hôtel particulier), b) you have heard about it from a friend (quite probable, because anyone would want to return to it) or c) you have read about it on Trip Advisor!
Either way, it's good news because this place is so charming, and incredibly quiet - even in July, and the very middle of one of the most dense theatre festivals in the world! In winter it is tiny, perhaps six or seven tables, in the warm summer nights it spreads out generously over the courtyard to seat quite a few. In both cases the food is creative, and truly delicious. The menu has some choice, but not too much so that everything is seasonal and totally fresh. The waiters are incredible, because they are classy, attentive and discrete as you would find it in a upmarket place, and yet they are truly friendly and- what is particularly important during a theatre festival when you have a play starting at a particular hour - they are really efficient!
What else? Oh, almost forgot: not expensive at all, great value for money. We knew the place in the winter time, but this was our first visit in the busy summertime. Certainly not our last.
