“A must if you like cheese and wine”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 11, 2012

We found this restaurant by complete accident and decided to go on our last night in Avignon. The staff were friendly and the restaurant romantic and cosy (although there is a table very close to the toilets, so make sure you ask not to be seated there! Thankfully we were not). They have an excellent wine list, and we enjoyed a 2006 Chateauneuf du pape. The portions were large and the food local and delicous. One of the best meals I had in Avignon, and I'm surprised it is not ranked higher.

“nice little restaurant with a very good cheese selection”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 21, 2012 via mobile

If you like sitting inside in a non-smoking environmen, while having a great cheese selection go for it. They have also great provencial meat and sausage selections. We had the camembert fondue for two: excellent and quite a lot! Together with a bottle of white wine we paid "only" 60 Euros, which is quite reasonable for the area and the food quality.

“What a great little restaurant!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2012

We walked passed this restaurant one afternoon and hubby looked in and commented that the place looked really cosy, rustic, romantic and charming. Hubby doesnt read menus as he'll eat anything but decided that we should go for dinner there later that night. The restaurant has a cheese type theme running through the menu and we ate cheese and ham spring rolls followed by chicken in a cheese sauce and hubby had duck with a blue cheese sauce. The food was beautiful (well cooked and presented and lots of it). The staff were very friendly (think hubby fell in love with the waitress as she was stunning!) even bringing us a large menu in English to help us out. The wine was good and the background music was chilled and cool. This is a great hip little restuarant with a great vibe, good food, good value, good service.

“Loads of charm”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2012

We found this small, quaint restaurant tucked away down one of Avignon's many narrow streets while in town during the recent Fête du Theatre. Filled with antiques and art, the atmosphere was delightful. Portions are large; we shared a Salad du Chef as a starter and it could have been enough for our entire dinner. My salmon with sauce chèvre was hot and tasty, although the sauce was a bit overwhelming for the delicate fish. My partner's Magrette du Canard was excellent. Service was very attentive without being overbearing. Only negative was that they overcharged us for our wine and it took 3 tries to get the bill corrected. We'd certainly try it again when we return to Avignon.

“Excellent non-tourist food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2012

We had taken a tour of Provence and our guide, who lives in Avignon, recommended this place to us. (Actually, she first told us to avoid--at all costs--the tourist restaurants in the Place de L'Horloge. We had eaten at one the night before and totally agreed with her.) She also told us that the restaurants that have only a few items on their menu are the ones that serve fresh food; any place that has many items is probably serving frozen food. Good tip! So La Vache had 4 main dishes on their menu, all incredibly fresh. I got the salmon in chevre sauce and it was EXCELLENT--probably the best meal I had on our entire European trip. My husband got the roast duck and said it was also very, very good. The service was fine; we don't speak French and they didn't seem to speak much English, so we were all a little shy around each other, but we all spoke the language of food and wine so we had no problems. The restaurant is nicely decorated inside; our hostess was quite elegant looking and I felt a little grubby and underdressed, but I'm sure they're used to seeing all kinds. Go where the locals (and the in-the-know tourists) go and you won't be disappointed.
