Chez Marie
Ranked #36 of 56 Avignon B&B and Inns
Reviewed August 13, 2011

We stayed here in April 2010 for a couple of nights for a holiday.

Upon arrival we were yelled at which we found to be a very disappointing start. the reason we were yelled at as we were meant to arrive in the afternoon and ended up arriving around 10pm. I understand that this could be annoying, however we did send Marie an email during the day that we had to catch a later train as the one we anticipated catching was fully booked. We were told upon arrival that we had ruined her evening plans. So not a good start.

We were then taken to our room was quite small, smaller than we thought based on the photos but I guess photos can be deceiving sometimes. the room barely had enough room for our 2 medium sized suit cases so it was interesting figuring out how to stack them. The bed was comfortable though.

The location of the B&B is ok. i think it was about a 20 minute walk to the wall of the old Avignon. the area seemed safe and it was quite straight forward to get to and from the B&B.

The breakfast was delicious although it was small. We have stayed in many B&B's which have had huge breakfast choices, but perhaps the French don't place much importance on breakfasts. tea, coffee, juice and some bread and jam.

Apart from getting yelled at when we arrived, there were 2 rather disappointing issues I wish to disclose. Firstly, we asked where we could wash our clothes and she pointed us towards a laundromat. that would have been fine if not the fact that when we got home we discovered there was actually a washing machine hidden in the shared bathroom that wasn't for guests. considering it is the bathroom for guests, you would expect you could use it. anyway, that is what we believe...

Secondly, and most importantly, (i find this very poor business practice), she complained to us that she got a bad review on Trip Advisor and requested that we write a positive review for her on the spot. At the time we were on our way out for a tour and also we didn't have an account with trip advisor so we said we would think about it.

Our stay in Avignon was disappointing. We would not stay here again.

After reading so much good review, we decided to skip our regular IBIS hotel and pay a little extra to stay at this little B&B , even we accepted that there won't be any air-conditioner available in this hot summer , but we expected the B&B is very comfortable and worth the money. It turned out a bit disappoined. During our stay, we heard all the noise outside and inside the house, we could hear clearly every conversation the guest next door is having with her mum. Due to this, we are also extra careful of what noise we can make in the house , eg. walking on the floor, closing the door, talking softly and take small shower.

Mind you, there is no WIFI at all, if you intend to connect to your outside world, you have to use only handphone - and not speaking loud.

To reach the upper floor of where the rooms are, we have to use the only staircase which is quite arrow, it will be not convenient if you have big luggage. The FAN room is bigger than the HAT room , in the HAT room, there is little space you could move around but luckily we were out most of the time. The entire room is very clean which I would expect this from a high rated B&B.

During the summer, the parking outside the house can be quite full, we have to park the car a bit further . We later found out that the IBIS hotel in the center (just near the wall) has a huge carpark that is free (just next to the wall) and it's 59Euro per night though there is no breakfast but a crossant and a cup of coffee would costs you 5 euro only.

If you don't mind the price you paid and the above disadvantage, it is a good B&B to stay. The landlady is knowledgable and willing to share with you about where to go which is helpful for any 'Avignon-beginner'. walking to the Avignon center (the wall) is around 10min if you know the way.Avignon is an incredible city to visit.

Chez Marie is an oasis minutes away from central Avignon. The rooms are comfortable and charming. The courtyard is delightful! Marie provides a light continental breakfast with sumptuous homemade preserves. A perfect stay!! Thank you, Marie!

Chez Marie is a very pleasant B&B, it had a nice relaxing quality to it.
Marie was a genuine, helpful and friendly host.
She gave us excellent recommendations of places to visit, including the superb market on Weds in St Remy en Provence.
The walk into the city walls was not unexpected, however with my parents in their 60's it was about 10-15 mins to the walls and therefore 25 minutes to walk right into the centre. We drove and parked in the free carpark by the walls a couple of times as I had heels on!
The rooms are tastefully furnished, we had two suitcases and hand luggage so perhaps lacked a little space. Stayed in the fan room, and very good shower.
Overall throuroughly enjoyed our stay and our trip benefitted from meeting Marie.

Marie made us feel very welcome at her charming little bed and breakfast. Immaculately clean and very close to the centre of Avignon - we didn't need to use the car! Lovely breakfasts too! We highly recommend Chez Marie.

I felt like home in this tiny B&B in Avignon. Marie is a warm host and takes great care for guests. I really enjoyed my stay. The bed was super comfortable and the rooms clean as a whistle. The only down side I would have to say is it's outside the walls of Avignon but then Avignon is really not that big. Other than that it's worth the walk.
Thank you Marie
