“An enjoyable stay at Le Colbert”
Reviewed June 11, 2013

We stayed 2 nights with Patrice and Annie in early May. They are the gracious hosts of this charming hotel located inside the walls of Avignon, a short walk from the Post Office ( which is the terminus of the bus from the TGV station).

Breakfast was good, but I can't agree that it was great. Perhaps we had it on an off day. We enjoyed the croissants, coffee, and jam, but that was breakfast. Their restaurant choices were very good, and the conveniently located tourism office was a good meeting point for the tours we took around the area.

The hotel is decorated with some wonderful prints, and the decor was extremely well tied together. We had a room on the second floor, and though the hotel is lacking an elevator, Patrice helped with our bags, making this a non-issue. The curving staircase just added to the quaintness of the premises.
We'd go back in a second. We were forced to move elsewhere as I mistakenly underestimated the time we wanted to spend in Avignon. We moved to the hotel d'Europe, which was much more elegant, but there is no substituting for the helpful hands of Annie and Patrice. Highly recommended.

Despite numerous positive reviews on this site for this hotel, we have to agree with Bruno P (see 9/2012 review) that the owners are hostile and aggressive as soon as one deviates from their rules. We stayed here in June 2013. The room we were given on the first floor was painted a dark gold with funereal lights. My partner asked for an extra chair or stool for the room so that both of us could sit by the window. Patrice maintained that there was not a single extra chair in the establishment. Thereafter, Annie, his wife, never said hello to either of us in three days. On the day we were leaving, we were under the misimpression that checkout was noon. Annie called at 11:05 demanding that we leave immediately. We said that we needed to pack but would be out in 20 minutes. She yelled, "Leave NOW!" At 11:07, the maid knocked on the door. At 11:12, the phone rang again. Still packing, we ignored it. At 11:15, Patrice showed up at the door, again demanding that we leave. We said that we were almost done and would be down in a minute. We left by 11:20. So, fellow travelers, ask for nothing extra and leave on time and you might have a great time. If not, beware. Ann N

Room Tip: Rooms are quite dark, opt for a top floor (but note, there's no lift).

A TGV ride from CDG Paris to Avignon and quick bus ride to Centrale and very short walk (even with luggage) brought us to Le Colbert and the welcome from Patrice. It was a rainy day and the warm and bright colors and interesting art posters perked us up. Our room was small but had absolutely everything we needed for our one night stay. There were two large windows and lots of light. An excellent shower and water pressure. The room temperature was comfortable as was the bed and we slept wonderfully well. The wardrobe even had drawer space. We could have been comfortable here for many days.Patrice offered suggestions for dinner and things to do the next day. He held our luggage after we checked out so we were able to attend Mass, eat lunch and take in quite a few sites before we met our cruise ship. The breakfast room provided us with a cheery start to our morning and the coffee, croissants, jams etc were a perfect French start to our day. Our hosts take great pride in maintaining a pleasant hotel (very much like a B & B). The email communication prior to our visit was excellent and the map and directions extremely helpful. It made planning a breeze and we cannot thank Patrice enough for all his advise and help which made this a perfect start to our vacation in France.

We had a wonderful stay at the beginning of June and can't recommend this hotel enough. Our hosts were genuinely friendly and couldn't do more to help. The room was clean and comfortable and full of interesting artwork. The shower was brilliant and we had the best croissants in France for breakfast!

Wonderful location - in a quiet side street, yet 2 mins walk from the buzz of cafes and restaurants. Would definitely go back if ever visiting Avignon again.

My husband and I stayed with Annie and Patrice for 5 nights in May in Room 9 on the 2nd floor up from ground level. The climb up and down helped us burn off the calories from all the wonderful food we ate in Avignon! Our room (cozy yet adequate) overlooked the back courtyard with views of roof tops and nearby buildings but it was still private and very quiet for sleeping. The bed was comfortable and we liked NOT having a duvet but regular blankets and sheets. Despite the small bathroom, everything was efficiently laid out, i.e., little trash cans mounted on the walls up from the floor so you did not have to lean way over to open them; a small round mirror strategically placed on the wall by the sink to make it easier to shave and apply makeup; plenty of shelf space for toiletries; and a good sized basket in the shower for shampoos, etc. (The only thing I wished they had were washcloths.)

Everything was spotless, too. The internet connection worked very well and we appreciated the safe in the room. We opted for the continental breakfast (the special ones are only prepared during the art festival days) in the hotel as it was more convenient to then immediately head up to our room afterward and collect our things for the day. We were very grateful for being so close to the bus and regional train stations for day trips.

Annie and Patrice also helped secure a few restaurant reservations for us, too, that were within easy walking distance. We can recommend L'Epice and Love, Fou de Fafa, Caveau Du Theatre and le 26.

We took the bus shuttle back and forth to the TGV station -- very convenient and so much less expensive than a taxi. They drop you and pick you up in front of the post office which is only a couple of blocks away from Hotel Le Colbert.

We highly recommend this hotel for it's comfort, location and value!

Wonderful location and delightful small hotel. Rooms are small but spotlessly clean. The ambiance is amazing. Wonderful collection of artworks give a warm, French provincial feeling. The inn-keepers are warm and friendly. A great value for Avignon.

We had a wonderful stay for three days. Patrice and Annie are terrific hosts who were very helpful with places to visit and restaurants to try. Although small the room was spotless and well equipped with new appliances. Breakfasts are continental style but reasonably priced
