Avignon is the type of place where you slow down, relax and almost do nothing. Our group chose this tour utilizing the port of Marseilles. First we went to a local winery in Chateauneuf de Pape for tastings which was informative and interesting. Our tour then led us to Avignon where we viewed the Rhone River from a elevated vantage point going into a very nice park. Of course he pointed out all the historical buildings which included the Palace of the Popes and the Cathedral. All perfect for acquiring great photos. We had a couple of hours to meander around and shop a little before heading back to our ship. All in all a pleasant way to spend the day.

Avignon is stunning and steeped in history. The buildings are classic roman and are very impressive. The bridge and educational centres at the palace are very informative.

Avignon is about 2 1/2 hours from the Charles De Gaul aiprort in Paris by the high speed train (TGV) located right next to the airport. We recently stayed in a hotel near the Papal Palace in Avignon. The old city is very walkable and a sort of "train" leaves every half hour from the square outside the palace for a 25 min tour (with multi-language translation) of the central city. It's a good way to get oriented. There are numerous cafes and restaurants in and around the streets leading to the palace.
