Owner description: This emblematic site in the history of Avignon is known throughout the world in the famous song. Built in the 12th century, it was destroyed several times by spates on the Rhone River, before being rebuilt and finally abandoned in the 17th century.

You can't come to Avignon and miss this experience. It's one thing to admire the Pont d'Avignon from afar, it's another to walk along it and hear about its turbulent history via the audio guide. Highly recommended, particularly for children who might otherwise struggle to engage in historical tours. My girls aged 7, 8 and 9 were fascinated by the story and enjoyed the visit very much.

Who would pay good money to go on a bridge that goes only half way across a river? It is one of the must do things in Avignon and the visitor centre interprets the story well, not a thing to spend too long doing but certainly an iconic part of the Avignon experience.

If you ever heard the song when you were little, you had to dream of seeing it or walking on it at least once in your life time... well, that for me was this past December 30 after 30 years of having learned the dance and the song... which, to my surprise comes from an original 16th century mass with a melody very different from the tune we know since the late 1800s...
You have to walk it with magic eyes and enjoy the rich history of this once Papal City and legendary bridge so damaged by several past flood furies of the Rhone.

If you are a photo-aficionado, photo ops are everywhere, not only of the panorama across and along the river, but also about every step, stone and chain of this historic bridge.

We had the fortune to visit it on a beautiful winter bright sunny afternoon and got to see the sunset on the Rhone - simply spectacular!! Not too many people which made things even better... the free audio-guide is a must so you understand even more the bridge (although a bit long but worth it).

One cute plus of the visit: random kids visitors dancing and singing the actual song :)

I live where there are just bridges. This is not one. This work is a "bridge" with a story. It cost little, offers great views and speaks softly. My December day was sunny and the bridge did not disappoint. If in Avignon for something to enrich, take an hour and walk the bridge. No regrets.

this is the famous bridge of Avignon? Really, not much to see. Easy to understand why, the last time if fell down, they didn't rebuild it. There was once a famous cafe under the bridge; but that's long gone.

So much else to see and do... spend about 5 minutes here; tops. It's not "romantic" or anything; it's and old bit of bridge; nothing special.

Note: they will charge you to walk on the bridge! If you see the Palais first; then it's only a euro or two to walk on the bridge. Even then... would be hard pressed to say it's "worth" even a single euro to walk on the bridge, unless you want bragging rights to tell others you walked on it.
