Owner description: This emblematic site in the history of Avignon is known throughout the world in the famous song. Built in the 12th century, it was destroyed several times by spates on the Rhone River, before being rebuilt and finally abandoned in the 17th century.

Busy city but easy to walk about. Of couse we hummed the tune " Sur le Pont d'Avignon" as we walked on it and chuckled at a tourist who started to dance. Great views for photos and it served as a good access point to get into the Palais du Papes area up the wall and staircase and into a park before we descending into the Palace area. Views not to miss as you ascend the wall!

I guess you have to visit the Pont St Benezet whilst in Avignon - it is an iconic landmark of the city and entry can be bought with a joint ticket from the Palais du Papes. When as is said and done however, you get a nice view of the river and city from a bridge that doesn't fully cross a river and that's about it. The audio guide is a bit dull (unlike the papal palace). I did enjoy the AV presentation on its history which probably justified the visit.

Walking out on the bridge is not only scenic with great river views and backdrop of the city, but offers insights about the relationship between the Rhone and the city historically. We were there on a day of Mistral winds and it was exhilarating!

The 2nd most famous site in Avignon (or the 1st depending on your history knowledge!). Pleasant enough, it will set you back half an hour, but the view of Avignon from the end of the bridge is fantastic and will stay with you. Make sure you get an Avignon pass, free from the tourist office, for discounted entry!

Who cares about the song, which I only vaguely knew. Worth it just for the history and the experience of the view up and down the Rhone river and back to Avignon itself. Bought a joint ticket with the Palais des Papes and I must admit I enjoyed this more.
