“Best Location in Avignon”

My wife and I very much enjoyed La Mirande. The hotel is on a controlled street, which we accessed by intercom. The hotel is next to the Pope's palace and upon arrival they upgraded us to a room overlooking the palace (as member of Luxury Hotels of the world). They were VERY patient with my wife explaining louring and dining options. World class accomodations, service and dining. Made for a great experience.

Room Tip: Front room looking toward the Place

We visited with friends who stayed at La Mirande and had lunch with them on the patio. The service was exceptional, food excellent, and setting exquisite. The hotel is located in the heart of the walled city adjacent to the Papal palace.

Excellent location in the midst of the walled city. We had room 23 which is a double suite. The bedroom and bathroom were spacious and comfortable. The living room was large but the furniture was uncomfortable. Nice views of the pope's palace and working gargoyles. The service was very friendly. The Michelin starred restaurant was good but not great although I had a steak in an excellent brown sauce equivalent to a steak at Le Cirque. You need a Tom Tom or other GPS to navigate here as the street is literally closed to traffic until you get clearance and the pop up blocking the road is remotely removed.

We cannot say enough good things about the Hotel La Mirande, where we stayed for several nights in November during a short vacation trip. The hotel itself is spectacularly designed, with Provençal prints throughout. Each room has its own unique character, all equally beautiful. Our private patio looked right out onto the Palais des Papes and a neighboring church, where the ringing bells greeted us each morning. The location of this hotel is perfect - on a quiet lane facing the magnificent Palais - and the staff could not have been more attentive and welcoming. This is a hotel surprising in its lack of pretention; it is a completely comfortable experience. We never wanted to leave!

La Mirande is a hotel I'd most definitely recommend to anyone visiting Avignon. Situated directly across from the Palais des Papes, the hotel lives to its standards. With great, friendly and impeccable service, it offers a sense of warmth and old world charm. Plus the hotel restaurant and bar serves my favourite bubby - Champagne Billecart-Salmon. Perfect indeed!

Other than the initial hassle of having to manourvre the small cobbled streets to get to the hotel within the old city centre (preferably using a GPS), everything else is a bliss and even the roads become more accessible and easy to manourvre around after a day or two.

Would I stay there again? An absolute yes! :)

Overall, we enjoyed our stay at La Mirande. The hotel is located in the heart of the old city directly across from the Palais des Papes. Getting there can be a bit tricky (if you are driving from the Marseille airport, make sure to ask for detailed directions as nearly all the roads in and around the old city are one way and extremely narrow. Once there, the service was excellent. From the valet taking your bags and car (parking was 25 euros a night), to the front desk helping with everything from concierge services to aiding us with an emergency wine and cheese request. More specifically, the front desk did an excellent job helping us plan each day both in Avignon and around Provence. There daily intineraries are complete with maps, directions, places to see and recommended restaraunts. With the exception of our lunch in Uzes (see related review), every recommendation was spot on.

Our room was spacious (for French standards) with what must be 12-foot ceilings and very charming. The bathroom contained a rain forest shower/tub with an interior separate toliet room. Although a little dated (shower would take a couple of minutes to stop significantly dripping and toilet was a little tempermental), overall, the room was very charming especially taking into account the age of the hotel building. Finally, our room was on the street side (as opposed to the garden side). We typically prefer as quiet a location as possible. That said, the street noise was not all that bothersome -- even for a light sleeper like me. My understanding is that there are very few rooms on the garden side of the hotel. In addition, there was a Belgian folk/rock band that played each night outside on the street across from the hotel from around 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. They were wonderful and it was nice to listen to them perform while getting ready for dinner each night.

We did not eat the restaurant but we did enjoy wine and cheese at the hotel's beautiful outside garden. Both the wine and cheese were quite good -- although extremely expensive -- even for Provence (two glasses of house white wine and a cheese plate were 50 euros). That said, Provence is expensive. There are few, if any, bargains. We would recommend to sprulge, enjoy yourself, and stay at the hotel.

Yes, your bank manager will cry (we did get a good deal, but still stung the wallet) but it was a 50th birthday treat for the wife. An amazing hotel, you step into history but the refurbishment of this fine buidling has given an individual style. The covered courtyard where tea is served is enchanting. The breakfast room a visual feast, to match the actual on laid out for you each morning. It is the small touches, such as the high quality toiletries (not quite so sure about the TV mirror) which remind you how a top class hotel stands above the rest. We did not eat in the restuarant as the reviews for it were not great, but we did book the table d'hote which was an amazing experience.
