“Don't think it's really 4 stars”

Stayed here with an escorted bus tour. The lobby belied our room. It was hard to rate this because it was very, very roomy, so excellent in that category, but it was worn and old and kind of dark and dingy, so average on that level. It seems like maybe the room used to be an apartment. Our room was spacious: Living room with couch, table, chairs and closet. Separate bedroom with good bed, separate area with sink, separate area with tub, shower & toilet. Very nice balcony with table and 2 chairs, overlooking pretty gardens.

Sounds great, huh? But it seemed old and dated. I opened the closet and found a can of bug spray, which made me wonder. On our last day, (3 nights) I did find an ant on our bed. The walls were pretty banged up and the room needed painting.

Not good maid service. When we arrived, there was one plastic cup on the bathroom counter. One. We stayed there 3 nights and they never brought us another clean cup or added another one (2 people in the room). No kettle or tea, coffee in room. Water pressure good and water stayed hot.

The location was great, as other reviews have said. It was right across street from old walls, but on the opposite end of the walls where the famous bridge is located. Right next to train station, so that's convenient for some. If we visited Avignon on our own, I would not stay here. Spacious yes, but it just seemed a tiny bit grungy to me, although I've been in much worse places.

It is almost as if someone has started to refurbish the hotel, but run out of money half way through. The lobby area suggests very good quality furnishings, but our room, although clean was very odd, lots of old cupboards and old furniture.

Worth staying at because of its location, just outside the city walls, but don't expect great things inside the hotel itself

We stayed at this hotel for five nights in May. Travelling by train from Bristol, St. Pancras, Eurostar and TGV to Agignon. Brilliant both ways. We have stayed near this location before in May and it has been quite cool at night so this year was a suprise - it was hot - both day and night. We packed more than we needed ,as usual. The Hotel was just what we thought it would be. It was fine; the staff were very polite and professional. Bedroom only, gave us the freedom to get up when we wanted and to eat where and when we wanted. The bedroom and bathroom were both clean and spacious and there was plenty of hot water morning or evening if you wanted a shower plus fluffy towels. Air-con boomed abit, but then it does in most places; so we take earplugs. Wifi was in the foyer, but that was fine - we were on holiday. The main town was two minutes walk away. As was the bus stop to the TGV station - euro 1.20 each to the Avignon TGV station. The local station nearby (close to the hotel) was great for getting to Orange, Nimes, Arles. We had a lovely time in Avignon - it is such a great town in which to walk, look about and soak up the feel of the place, plus lovely shops. Also home to the only Van Gogh painting Provance. We had some fab meals in both the side streets and the main street. The Grand Hotel was a really good base to explore Avignon and revisit the region. We would quite happily stay at the Grand Hotel again.

Having read some of the other reviews I was concerned about the our booking. Had we made the wrong choice. The answer was definitely no. The location is great, easy access to the beautiful walled city. There was always someone to help on the front desk and the rooms were spacious and very comfortable. I was particularly impressed with the size of the bed! For once my husband (6ft 4in) did not have to hang his feet off the end of the bed!!
The bus from the TGV station stops (poste) opposite (city wall between the two) the hotel is and very cheap as well as frequent.

Room Tip: Go by train.

Do not know how this hotel managed to get some good review in various booking website. I did believe them but proved to be really disappointing. First, there is no Internet service in any hotel rooms, even it looks it have in some booking website- a very misleading feature. I was really frustrated when I find it when I checked in, as I had a business conference call on next morning. The only place you can have internet Wifi is the open place in lobby- very noisyand unsecure access. Second, there is no tea-coffee facility in the room, all furniture looks really shabby. The hotel is very old and out of date in many places (do not believe the photos in their website). Third, I checked in around 7:30pm on Thursday evening, and the hotel restaurant had already closed! Fourth, the only person speaking English or can understand you is the Receptionist. Fifth, the light in the corridor is dark and the floor structure is confusing. I cannot find the lift and have to walk through the stairs (there is only one lift and slow).

Yes, the hotel location is close to the Coach station, and the room is big. But they are no use, if the hotel just give you poor feelings. In general the hotel looks like a half dead old person, no energy, no feeling, pale white colour and old facilities. It may got a 4 star 20 years ago, but definitely a no in today's standard!
If you are looking for an alternative in the same area, I would recommend you move to the Ibis next door (as I did). It is much cheaper, with free wifi internet every room, and 24hr restaurant, and more importantly, a vivid feeling for your holiday.

Room Tip: Room on the street side is noisy

We've stayed here twice, mainly because the rooms are big and the location is excellent (literally just outside the city walls, it's quiet but walkable to all places of interest). Most of the staff were helpful, although it was a challenge to get any attention from the reception staff because they were always so busy. The tourist information centre is 5 minutes' walk away, though, and the bus and railway stations are practically next door.

Skip the hotel breakfast because it's expensive and there are plenty of patisseries nearby.

There aren't many good hotels in central Avignon so we considered the Grand a bit of a find, but it could really do with a facelift. The rooms are really spacious and we had a small patio, but the paving slabs were loose to the point of being dangerous. The water temperature in the bathroom was unpredictable (and sometimes just cold), and the carpets smelt damp and mouldy.

Avignon itself is a delight, although the Eurostar stop there means that in August it's crammed to capacity with tourists. It's also a shame about the endless boy-racers and scooter-riders who spend their evenings riding up and down the main drag while you're trying to enjoy a relaxing beer on a warm night. They don't add to the ambience!

By the way, if you're arriving by Eurostar, take the bus from the station into town - it's a long way and the taxis cost a fortune.

Hotel is unnoticable beside the main train station, no parking especially for taller vehicles with roof boxes. Foyer and hotel modern chic and seems impressive at reception. Unfortunately the rooms where unheated when we arrived, the road noise from ill fitting wiindows as you are on the edge over the main road around the city walls, meant that we had to request a change of room. The other room was a suite for up to 6. The shower head had been damaged and had to be replaced after complaining to reception. There was no room service menu or details the rooms, nor were there any tea or coffee making facilities in the rooms.
Some bedrooms seemed to be missing televisions, and there were plugin electric radiators provided as heating in the bedrooms, this seemed a liitle odd for a supposedly 4 star hotel.
The staff (2) were functional if rather cold, to the needs of the hotels clients.
In all honesty I have stayed in better 2 star hotels, and at their prices the service and qulity is not there.
