I only ate 5 restaurants while I was in Avignon (my poor waistline!) but I think this was my favourite. I am really surprised that this place isn't higher than 30th place.

I loved the setting which is in effect the side of the church. It look like a little courtyard with a couple of houses bordering it and small cobbled roads on both sides.

I had the steak tartare which was absolutely great. It was chopped rather than minced steak with frites and salad leaves. Bien!

The place is great for lunch as it is in the shade.

This was my favourite place we vistied in Avignon to eat. It's set in a courtyard next to a church so it's got a lovely old world feel to it and in the height of summer, it seemed a lot cooler than other places. The food was excellent: I had the duck breast and gizzard salad (don't be put off, it was duck liver not anything unspeakable) and my other half had steak tartare (also excellent). It's also a wine bar so you can sit down and just have wine if you've already over indulged thst day. NB Closed Sundays.

Famous with the locals for their tartare (but the pieces were considered a bit 'too' large for my girlfriend's taste and I think she had a point....though I LOVED mine. The french fries were among the best I've had in a long time.

This is a wine bar with a restaurant and as such the waitress was able to recommend a couple of nice wines to have with my lunch....but again...this is a SIMPLE place....so if you want a more involved affair, this is not the right place for you...a pleasant lunch as we enjoyed Avignon on a Saturday....shopping and sightseeing.

Terrace is under some shady trees and is (as all good restaurants should be) frequented by locals....in fact there were virtually no non French speakers as we sat down....big plus.

Again, a small outfit and we watched at least one group get turned away as we enjoyed our meal....but their business seems to be driven by walk-ins.

Service is good and the staff willing to help (big thanks to them for recommending CO2).

Not sure about dinner but I'd gladly return and recommend.

Lovely, simple lunch at L'Hermitage. Tucked in a shady and cool spot, we had a lovely 2 course lunch with great service, great quality food and couldn't have asked for more for a well needed stop. Good value for money too, 2 course, 1 beer and a 500ml carafe of rose wine 42 euros. Would definitely recommend.
