The Pope's Palace is beautiful and full of history. They sell audio units for self-paced walking tours or you can join an organized tour. It's a must see in Avignon.

“Must see in Avignon”
Reviewed February 15, 2014

We were part of a group of 16 who visited the Pope's Palace with an English-speaking guide. I recommend a guide regardless of the language you speak so that you learn the most about the structure and its history. Wear comfortable shoes to make walking indoors and out plus on paved and unpaved paths and up and down stairs safe and easy. It took about an hour and a half to complete the tour then another 30 minutes cruising the gift shop. If you have time, walk around the streets surrounding the palace. You can keep track of where you are by looking for the statue atop the palace.

“Fantastic place to visit”
Reviewed February 6, 2014

We spent hours wandering around this place. We tend to forget that Avignon was a major seat of power and that popes lived here prior to Rome. Whilst a lot of the rooms are empty it is interesting to read the cards that are in the rooms and learn what they were used for and when they were built and by whom

“Avignon : From Rome and Back”
Reviewed February 2, 2014

The history of the move from Rome to Avignon, the dynamics of the political forces of the 1200s, were better understood after seeing the Palace and the palace location in reference to the Rhone.

This Palace is a jewel of France.

Plus points: excellent tour guides are present. Please consider hiring one.
Camera opportunities are abundant. Please consider taking a camera.
Great touristy tractor pulled buses leave from the plaza in front to the Palace. It is OK to be a tourist.
Abundant restaurants in a walkable range.
