It is a wonderful piece of history, but anybody at all frail or the disabled need to be aware that there are an awful lot of steps and not all in perfect shape

“Interesting History”
Reviewed October 19, 2013

A trip to Avignon would be incomplete if you did not at least walk around the outside of the Palais. It is an interesting structure dating back over 400 + years. If you are interested in historic buildings, this is certainly a place to visit. If you had time, we found it both worthwhile and interesting to go inside and walk through it. There is a wealth of history and information about the Catholic Church especially during the times that the Popes made this their home and centre of the church. After the Popes left, the building became a place of importance to the military and then government offices so its history is not entirely religious.

“Make sure you walk to the top!”
Reviewed October 17, 2013

One of the reasons to come to Avignon is to see the Palace of the Popes. Stunned by how huge it was and how well preserved. The history was interesting and if you don't want to pay extra for the audio guide, there are placards in each room, in English, which explains the usage of the room and much of the history of the French popes. Make sure you walk along the top of the building if your knees permit. We almost missed this as the stairway up isn't well marked, so ask if you think you've finished and you haven't walked along the battlements. Well worth the effort.

“Charmante”
Reviewed October 16, 2013

The architecture was amazing. The garden area is delightful, cool, calm and quiet. A great place to have a lunch break. The exhibit of Les Papesses was rather disappointing given that it was another ten Euros.

“External viewing only”
Reviewed October 15, 2013

Avignon is a beautiful city in an amazing region in France....as we only had 5 days we didn't think we had time to do the whole Palais de Papes as hand a long list of must see places from other travelers. The whole area of the P de P is stunning and overlooks the Pont Saint Benezet. Offers great views over to Villeneuve les Avignon....which is a place that should not be overlooked. In the piazza/square beneath the Palais people often sing and play music....has the best acoustics I have ever heard and can be heard clearly from one side of the square to the other. One of the little chapels within the complex has stone steps that have very obvious dips from where people have tread on their way in and out of the Chapel.
