“The heart of your Avignon visit”
Reviewed July 6, 2013

This is the mega-star of Gothic palaces in the world..The Popes Palace is enormous as it is part of a host of buildings. Its an imposing edifice both as a powerful fortress and a magnificent palace. It was the epicenter of the Christian world in the 14th century. Its an exceptional monument of world heritage. Nine popes ruled here, the most famous, benedict XII and Clement VI.
From the square in front ,it is beautiful but there is a discovery- tour awaiting those climbing the stairs to the ground floor. A visit within is divided into 24 areas.....Ceremonial rooms, chapels, cloisters, the private papal apartments....with their priceless frescoes.... Audioguides are essential in comprehending and assimilating the information that explains the power and richness of popes' lives. There was also an army of servants, cooks and royal clerics and clerks, that supported their lavish lifestyle.
You will need a couple of breaks to reflect on the fullness of what you see. Le Cafe-Terrasse,has excellent light choices of food and beverages or pop out into the square and indulge in the many good eateries there.

“Visit for the Pope's Palace”
Reviewed July 5, 2013

The Pope's Palace is very interesting, the rest of Avignon is not that interesting. It has retained most of the City walls and there are some interesting old buildings but not enough for a long stay.

“Great life if you are a Pope !”
Reviewed July 5, 2013

The premier attraction in Avignon and well worth a visit, lots of rooms in the old and new palaces. The Popes lived in some style while the peasants staved.
