We enjoyed our tour around the Palais. There were some very interesting parts (and some not so interesting). However, overall it is well worth the visit - the rooftop view is fantastic.

“Worth a Visit”
Reviewed November 3, 2012

The Popes' Palace is a very large, impressive complex of Gothic structures with a very rich history behind it. The walls, once painted with frescoes and hung with tapestries are now bare, so it is hard to imagine the place ever having been sumptuous or grand--just big. The tour is quite informative. Only the most jaded of children would find this an uninteresting place to visit, especially the views from the roof.
It is not cheap to visit. Think twice before buying a combo ticket to the Palais and the Broken Bridge. You save money, but do you really want to walk on that bridge?

Just check out every guidebook ever published, and this place inevitably scores a MUST SEE.
Disclosure: I've seen maybe too many castles and other fortified places, and after a while they start to look the same.

That being said, I strongly counsel travelers to skip this place. Like some other reviewers said, it's empty. Just another pile of stone purpose-built to keep out the neighbors.

Warning: If you do feel compelled to go, might be best to visit in cool weather. I'm told that this place cooks in Summer, and that the walkabout on the parapets and in the (gloomy) halls turns from just boring and expensive to murderously hot and indecently crowded.

The extraordinary audio guide (free with admission) plus the displays around the castle made it easy to take myself back in time.
