Hotel Cloitre Saint Louis

We enjoyed our stay here very much. It is very central but also has easy car parking (enter via Rue Saint-Charles at rear of hotel). Our room was very comfortable and well appointed. We found all tourist points of interest within walking distance. It is a fascinating town with an important history. Overall, the hotel has great charm, and is thoroughly recommended.

This hotel offers an exquisitely charming courtyard, very attractive public areas, and a decent continental breakfast, but these virtues do not make up for the poor quality of the room, the bathroom, and the service. We stayed there on a very hot day in August, when air conditioning matters a lot. The room had a loud air conditioner, and while the AC tried to blow out some cool air, it didn't do the job at all. The room was hot and never cooled down, making it impossible to sleep.
The bathroom was not really a bathrooom. There was a toilet in a tiny closet, but the bath and sink were not in a bathroom. The bath and sink were a part of the bedroom and fully exposed to it, separated from the sleeping area on one side only by a louvered partition. It offered no privacy. There was no shower or shower curtain. Instead, there was only a hand held sprayer in the bath tub. The tub itself was of poor quality, as was the finishing around the tub (caulking, panel on the side of the tub, etc.). The sink area was lit by only two small ceiling lights, one of which was blown. The soaps, shampoos, and towels were of low quality.
We called the front desk for service twice. First, we asked to get the air conditioner fixed or to be transferred to another room. The hotel said it had no other rooms to give us and that the weather was simply too hot for the air conditioner to be effective. (I found this to be an inadequate explanation. The outside temp. was about 92-95 Farenheit, characteristic of how hot Avignon gets in the summer. Any hotel air conditioning system in Avignon should anticipate this.) Nonetheless, the hotel said it would send a mechanic to the room to look at the air conditioner. The mechanic never came.
We also called the front desk to get the broken lightbulb replaced over the sink. The hotel said it would send someone up to change the bulb, but that person never came either.
The furnishings in the room were very simple. The artwork on the wall was cheap and lonely. The floor was smooth painted concrete, with a very thin unpadded carpet in the seating area, curled up on one edge so that it would have been very easy to trip over.
To get relief from the heat, we decided to go to the roof top pool. Here again, the hotel did not meet expectations. The pool area offered no relief from the direct sunlight or heat. There were chairs but no shade umbrellas, pergolas, or anything else to create a shadow.
Before going to sleep, we asked the front desk for a wakeup call. The promised wakeup call never came. This was inexcusable. Had it not been impossible to get to sleep because of the bad air conditioning, we would have overslept and missed our train out of Avignon.

I liked it, but I wish I stayed in the OLD section. They put me in the new section of this 16th Century building. I was a little dissapointed.

Great location in the middle of Avignon with a walking distance to many nice restaurants etc. Great and friendly service. Nice rooms. Charming pool at the roof. The atmosphere is very nice due to the fact that the hotel used to be a monestry.

The hotel is in a great location and was absolutely perfect for the Avignon Festival, but we got a bad room. Im not sure if we got this room because the hotel was full or maybe perhaps because the booking website gave a discount, but the room was up an elevator, down a hall, up two flights of stairs, down two halls and then down stairs again. it had a very low slung vaulted ceiling (my wife hit her head on the beam) and being on the top floor made the room very hot. Other than that, the staff was quiet nice and responsive and they had a PC you could use for free. I backed up my pictures using a card reader and a blank disc (I carry around for this type of opportunity) with no problems. If we had a better room, the price we paid at the booking website would have been perfect.

We stayed 5 nights and took advantage of the wonderful array of breakfast items (several dry cereals, scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, chocolate croissants, etc.) and enjoyed their elegant dinners each night. The staff was extremely helpful and the computer in the alcove was usually available to us for use. We appreciated the convenience of being within the walled city, with easy walking distance to all it had to offer. We could also walk to the nearby train station to book day-trips. The pool on the roof provided great comfort to cool off before the evening.

Located the opposite end of town from where all the touristy bits are, the Cloitre St Louis had been recommended to us as being quiet and good service and easy enough to get to those high spots a mile away. (The electric trolley service, one euro for any journey stops just near the hotel and must surely be the best value of anything in France at the moment ~ a cup of coffee will cost you 3 euros!!)The parking is round the back, but fantastic to have in a walled mediaeval city where all space is at a premium and well worth the money! Our rooms were in the old part, up near the swimming pool, under the eaves. Very quaint in that they had a spiral staircase within the room, so that you went up to the galleried bedroom bit and the ensuite was under the bedroom! Nicely furnished, clean.... all fine except for...well, the hot tap in the bathroom had literally come away from its mounting. So no hot water possible. I was offered another room in another part of the hotel (but then away from my travelling companion), or to use the next door's room shower facilities. I just felt this should have been sorted before a guest moved in to the room. The hotel isn't particulary cheap (see comment re France above!!) Breakfast was expensive at 16 euros, so ate at the cafe over the road (Coffee to die for!!) Likewise ate out the evening before at one of the best value restaurants that I have ever been to (see restaurant guide bit on here).... not surprisingly the hotel could not give me directions to get there! So all in all, like the Curate's Egg..... good in parts.
